Two Carolina Hurricanes headlines are breaking this afternoon.

First, news reported on twitter out of Kitchener that defenseman Ryan Murphy has been recalled by the Hurricanes. The team is expected to make the official announcement with a press release on Thursday morning. This type of move is unusual, but it appears to be an emergency recall and Murphy will need to return to Kitchener when the "emergency" is deemed over.

This news was rapidly followed by an announcement from John Forslund, also on twitter, that forward Jeff Skinner is sidelined by a concussion. Previously, the injury had been reported multiple times as an "upper body injury" but many suspected that Skinner's head first tumble into the boards against the Leafs may have caused lingering issues.

It's important to note that officials of the team are saying that Skinner suffered no symptoms during the game or the next day as he participated in a team practice and the Hurricanes Skate with the Canes fan event Friday night. He rested on Saturday as a scheduled off day, but symptoms worsened on Sunday and he unable to practice with the team or make the trip to Montreal.

We will have more as information becomes available.

UPDATE 6:35 pm: Yet another tweet, this time from Chip Alexander indicating that Murphy's recall is to replace Jamie McBain, who is also apparently out with an injury.
