The Carolina Hurricanes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead but were eventually worn down by the Montreal Canadiens and lost 4-1 to the Habs at the Bell Centre on Monday night.
The Canes had another disappointing night on special teams as they went 0-5 while with the man advantage and allowed a powerplay goal while short-handed, (1-3).
Jordan Staal got the visitors started when he knocked in the rebound of a Patrick Dwyer attempt just 3:38 into the game. Brett Bellemore earned his first career NHL point on the play as he led Dwyer perfectly with an outlet pass.
The Canadiens tied the game later in the first when Andrei Markov blasted in a powerplay goal from the point.
The home team took the lead early in the second period when waiver wire pickup, Jeff Halpern scored his first goal of the season. Then the Habs would score twice more in the third period, (one on an empty net), to salt the game away.
The Habs out-shot the Canes 29-19, but Carolina missed the net on 20 shots and had 19 more blocked. They were tightly checked by Montreal defenders most of the night.
Do the Hurricanes have anything left in the tank for the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night? We will soon find out.
