'Canes sign defenseman Mike Komisarek

Komisarek marks the first player signed by the Hurricanes during "Free Agent Frenzy," adding more depth to the defensive corps.

Abelimages

The Carolina Hurricanes and 31-year-old defenseman, Mike Komisarek have agreed in principle to a one-year deal worth $700,000, according to TSN.

Komisarek was drafted seventh overall in the 2001 NHL Draft by the Montreal Canadiens, where he played five seasons.

The past four seasons, he has played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and spent time in the American Hockey League last season with the Leafs' affiliate Toronto Marlies.

Last season Komisarek played only 11 games combined between the Leafs and Marlies, registering no points.
