The Carolina Hurricanes won their second preseason game in a row with a 2-1, win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday night in Columbus.

Nathan Gerbe scored both Carolina goals and most likely solidified his spot on the team with an excellent performance.  Cam Ward made 25 saves on 26 shots and reportedly looked as good as he has all preseason.

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening period, Gerbe tied things up for the Canes when he stole the puck and scored an unassisted goal on last season's Vezina winner, Sergei Bobrovsky.

Both teams battled in the third all tied up until Gerbe scored the game-winner with just 38 seconds left in the game.  Jordan Staal and Patrick Dwyer earned the assists.

The Hurricanes will wrap up their preseason against the Buffalo Sabres at home tomorrow night.  We will have a game preview up around noonish.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes were whistled for four penalties.  The Jackets were called for three.  Both teams killed off all chances successfully.
  • Jiri Tlusty and Gerbe led the team with four shots on goal each.  The team had a total of 23 shots on goal.
  • Andrej Sekera had a team high two blocked shots.  Drayson Bowman had a team high two hits.
  • Brett Bellemore blocked a shot and was hit in the face.  He returned to the ice in the third period.
