If the Carolina Hurricanes thought life in the Southeast Division was tough, things will most likely not be any easier in the new Metropolitan Division. As a matter of fact, the Canes have only posted a 39% winning record during the last three years against their new division foes.
The Canes posted a 7-10-3 record against their future rivals last season and were 6-17-4 the season before that. In 2010-11 they went 10-12-5 for a combined three season record of 23-39-12 against the other teams in the Metro Division.

The only team the Hurricanes have a winning record against over the three year period is the New York Islanders, (7-2-2).
They have not had a chance to play against the Columbus Blue Jackets very often in the past, but have not beaten the Jackets since the 2005-06 season and accumulated a record of 0-5-0 against them from then until now.
Of course, the Caps have given the Hurricanes fits in recent years, (5-10-2) as have the Flyers, (2-8-1).
The Canes have not done much better against the Rangers, (2-5-4), Devils, (4-6-1), or Penguins, (3-6-2).
In the new format, Carolina must play 30 games within their division, 24 games against teams in the Atlantic Division, and 28 games against the Western Conference teams, (one each at home and away).
Making the playoffs will be tough and the Canes will most likely need to improve results against their new division rivals to make it to the second season.
