Number To Know: Do-It-All Defensemen

Today’s Number To Know looks at the blueliners that can do it all for their teams.

12 — NHL defenseman who fit this profile: 23-plus minutes, 2:20-plus power play and penalty kill minutes, 0.5 points per game while playing at least 20 games this season.

Calgary defensemen Mark Giordano and TJ Brodie and Nashville’s Shea Weber and Roman Josi are the only duos that play together and fit the profile. The other eight are: Drew Doughty, Justin Faulk, Erik Johnson, Duncan Keith, Niklas Kronwall, Kris Letang, Alex Pietrangelo and Ryan Suter.

Carolina’s Faulk is the youngest at 22, with the next closest at 24 (Brodie, Doughty, Josi, Pietrangelo), and Kronwall is the oldest (33). Only Keith and Giordano, both 31, are also in their 30s. Five of the 12 were first round picks, four — including Faulk — were second-rounders, while Letang (third round), Brodie (fourth) and Giordano (undrafted) were taken later.
