Carolina offense and powerplay falls short in New York

Adam Hunger-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Rangers scored two goals in 11 seconds midway through the first period and Henrik Lundqvist did the rest as the Carolina Hurricanes lost, 3-0 at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night.

Lundqvist picked up his 56th career shutout in the win.

The Canes started out pretty well in this game but could not light the lamp.  Then the wheels fell off as the Rangers scored two times during an 11 second time span.  They had a total of three shots in the first period.

Overall, the Canes outshot the Rangers 33-23 but this was a classic case when it did not matter.  Carolina also went 0-6 on the powerplay.

Next up for the Hurricanes will be the Wild at home on Thursday night.

Game Notes:

  • Jeff Skinner led the way with five shots on goal and hit the post at least once on a close try.
  • The Canes won 64% of their faceoffs with Victor Rask winning 70%, (16 of 23).
