The Carolina Hurricanes got two goals from team captain Eric Staal, but the New Jersey Devils scored twice in the third period to defeat the Canes, 3-2 at the Prudential Center on Tuesday night.
The game winning goal was scored with just 3:05 left in the game as it deflected past Cam Ward off of a skate.
After a scoreless first period, Staal would put his team up 2:51 into the second. After the home team tied it, Staal scored another goal, his seventh of the season to make it, 2-1.
The Hurricanes entered the third period ahead and have usually been able to close out teams in this position. They had a 10-1-1 record while leading going into the third.
But the Devils crashed the net hard and made life tough for Carolina's goalie, who allowed those two third period goals on just four shots.
The Canes will return home and will next take on the Caps on Thursday night.
