The Carolina Hurricanes continued winning in the new year as they completed their four game road trip with a 5-4 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night at the SAP Center.

The Canes now have a 9-3-3 record in 2015.

Cam Ward picked up the win for Carolina and allowed four goals on 27 shots as he battled with Antti Niemi who allowed four goals on 29 shots, (the Canes also got  an empty netter).

Eric Staal got the scoring started in close with just 58 seconds left in the first period.

Andrej Nestrasil made it 2-0, five minutes and change into the second period on a very pretty move, with the help of a nice set up pass by Alexander Semin.

The Sharks came back as Tomas Hertl scored the first of two goals for him, but Elias Lindholm made it 3-1 on a powerplay goal just a bit later.

The home team would come on strong in the third period and scored twice to tie it up before Andrej Sekera notched one when his shot went in off of a defenseman's skate.  Victor Rask then scored an empty-netter after Lindholm hit the post on an attempt and it's a good thing he did as the Sharks would score again with just 55 seconds left to make things more interesting down the stretch.

The Canes held on the rest of the way though to close out the win.  They get a few days off now and will next face the Ducks at home on Thursday night.
