Ah, spring. The trees are blooming, the pollen is raging, and the most coveted prize in sports is two months from being awarded.
That's right, it's time for the annual Canes Country Playoff Pick 'Em. (What, you thought I was referring to something else?)
Last year, Grizzledbear ran laps around the field, picking both conference finals and the Stanley Cup final perfectly to take a 14-point win. The competition for second place was very bunched up, with seven players within ten points of each other. Feast of Maximum Occupancy took second, while yours truly finished third and redeemed himself after a sterling 10-point total in 2013.
The rules are simple, although a bit different than in years past to add a bit of suspense to the proceedings: in the comments, tell us who wins each series and in how many games. You get points (the number varies by round) for picking the correct winning team, and five bonus points (now the same in each round) if you get both the correct team and length of series.
After each round, we will tally up the results. In the first round, you get one point for the correct team winning, plus five bonus points if you pick the correct number of games in which that team wins its series. (You don't get any points if you pick the correct number of games but the incorrect team.)
In order to level the playing field, picks for all series must be in by the time the first games in each round start. I will close the comments at that time. For the first round, that means picks must be in by 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 15.
As for prizes this year, our Fearless Leader has some impressive swag on offer from the prize closet:
- The third-place finisher will win a Ray Whitney figurine from the Canes' 10th Anniversary season.
- If you finish second, you will win a set of four game day cards handed out during the 2006 Stanley Cup Final for games 1, 2, 5 and 7 with rosters on the reverse side.
- And should you win the pick 'em, a real treat awaits you. The winner will receive a 2005-06 Parkhurst True Colors jersey card featuring a piece of jersey from 8 Carolina players who won the Cup: Cam Ward, Eric Staal, Rod Brind'Amour, Doug Weight, Andrew Ladd, Justin Williams, Martin Gerber, and Cory Stillman, with a retail value of $60.00 according to Beckett.
So...not bad, eh? The CC staff's picks are below. Post yours in the comments. Good luck!
