The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Thursday that Michelle McMahon, a studio host and reporter for the Big Ten Network based in Chicago, will join the team as a on-air television and web host in the 2015-16 season. McMahon, a 2012 graduate of the University of Michigan, has hosted hockey and lacrosse programming on BTN for the past three years, in addition to serving as a sideline reporter for multiple sports in the Chicago area on multiple networks.
McMahon replaces Chantel McCabe, whose contract with the Canes was not renewed after it ended on June 30. Among McMahon's responsibilities will be hosting Hurricanes LIVE! pregame show on Fox Sports Carolinas, and hosting and producing video content for the club website. In that regard, McMahon is also a partial replacement for Amber Jaye, who left the team following the 2014-15 season and hosted web content in addition to her role as the in-arena host. The team has posted a job opening for the latter position, focusing solely on the in-arena hosting responsibilities.
The release from the team is below.
MICHELLE McMAHON TO JOIN CANES AS TV/WEB HOSTWill host Hurricanes LIVE! on FOX Sports Carolinas and team’s online contentDon Waddell, President of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that Michelle McMahon will join the Hurricanes as TV/Web Host. McMahon’s primary roles will include serving as host of Hurricanes LIVE! prior to all of the team’s games on FOX Sports Carolinas and SportSouth, as well as hosting and producing video content for CarolinaHurricanes.com.
McMahon has been based in Chicago since 2012, working primarily at The Big Ten Network (BTN). At BTN, she produced content for and hosted the network’s weekly hockey and lacrosse shows, co-hosted the Women’s Sports Report and served as color analyst for the network’s volleyball coverage. She also worked as a sideline/field reporter for live events on BTN, FOX Sports and Comcast SportsNet-Chicago, and has contributed to BTN’s online hockey coverage.
"Connecting fans with the team and its players online and on television is a priority for the Hurricanes and our partners at FOX Sports Carolinas," said Waddell. "We are excited to have Michelle join the team and be the face of those connections that are so important to the fan experience. She has done good work covering hockey for The Big Ten Network and we feel that she is a great fit for this role."
"Michelle has a dynamic personality and her experience covering hockey will be a valuable addition to our Hurricanes coverage," said Randy Stephens, executive producer, FOX Sports Carolinas. "We are looking forward to her joining John Forslund and Tripp Tracy on our telecasts."
A 2012 graduate of the University of Michigan, McMahon played four years of Division I volleyball with the Wolverines, helping the team to two Sweet Sixteen appearances and one Elite Eight appearance. While in school, she worked as a production assistant for Mgoblue.com and held internships with NBC15 in Madison, WI, as well as Michigan IMG Radio Network.
