The Carolina Hurricanes have trimmed their roster again, assigning six players Monday to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. The most notable is first-year pro Sergey Tolchinsky, a dazzling-yet-undersized winger that was seen by some as a darkhorse candidate to crack the roster. Also reporting to Charlotte are forwards Brendan Woods, Phil Di Guiseppe and Brody Sutter, defenseman Trevor Carrick, and goaltender Drew MacIntyre. All six players will be at Checkers camp when it opens Tuesday. Charlotte also announced that Jared Staal, who was not re-signed by Carolina in the offseason, has been invited to Checkers camp on a tryout basis.

The cuts bring Carolina’s roster down to 27, giving a clearer picture as to who might be in Nashville for the season opener on Oct. 8. On defense, former first round picks Haydn Fleury and Noah Hanifin remain with Carolina for now, as do first-year pros Brett Pesce and Jaccob Slavin.

At forward, Brock McGinn has clearly made an impression — he is one of 15 forwards remaining in camp. Derek Ryan is also still with Carolina. The 28 year old was MVP and leading scorer in the Swedish Hockey League last season and signed a two-way deal with Carolina over the summer. MacIntyre’s reassignment to Charlotte also sets Carolina’s tandem in net — barring injury — to start the season, with veteran Cam Ward and newcomer Eddie Lack still battling for the right to be the team’s No. 1 goalie.
