The Tampa Bay Lightning remained red hot and defeated the Carolina Hurricanes, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night in Tampa Bay.
The Hurricanes played one of the hottest teams in the league dead even until Alex Killorn broke the tie with just 43 seconds left in the extra period.
Eddie Lack made a couple of beautiful saves in overtime and ended up making 26 saves on the 30 shots he faced, although he had some shaky moments handling the puck earlier in the game.
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead in the opening period when Ondrej Palat got past Ron Hainsey and beat Lack with a skill move.
The Canes came right back in the second period when Victor Rask beat Ben Bishop off of a nice Phillip Di Giuseppe pass.
Palat scored again to give the Bolts a 2-1 lead but the Canes opened the third period when an Elias Lindholm shot hit Jordan Staal's leg then bounced in the net off a Tampa defenseman to tie the score.
Jeff Skinner then buried the rebound of a Di Giuseppe shot to give Carolina the lead midway through the third, but they could not close out the home team.
Tyler Johnson, who was the hero of last season's playoffs, out-maneuvered Derek Ryan right in front of the Carolina net and scored to send the game to overtime.
The overtime was an exciting one as both teams skated up and down the ice with various chances, but Killorn got past Joakim Nordstrom and then out-waited Lack, who sprawled to make the save.
The win was a franchise record ninth in a row for the Bolts.
The Hurricanes will return home and will next play the Senators on Tuesday night.
