Carolina Hurricanes at Vegas Golden Knights: Preview and Game Night Hub

The Hurricanes look to avoid yet another bust and beat the house in their first trip to Vegas

NHL: Carolina Hurricanes at Anaheim Ducks Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

After a fourth consecutive loss last night in Anaheim, all of which have come on this long road swing, the Hurricanes will have yet another chance to right the ship tonight as they make their first ever appearance in Las Vegas to take on the Golden Knights for the first time.

The high-flying Golden Knights have shattered the low expectations that were placed upon them as an expansion team, as they’ve remained firmly in a playoff position ever since the season began.

With a rested roster and an abundance of speed among their forward ranks, Vegas could pose some serious problems to Carolina’s team defense. Add on to that the fact that star goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury will make his long-awaited return from a concussion tonight, and this contest starts to appear to present quite a challenge for a struggling Hurricanes squad.

The Canes will need to play their best game in quite some time tonight if they’re going to beat the house. Here’s everything you need to know in advance of tonight’s game.

Game Notes

  • Victor Rask enters tonight’s game in the midst of a three-game goal streak
  • Cam Ward has another chance tonight to join the highly exclusive 300-win club. If he does, he would be the fifth active goalie to do so. Among active goalies, only Henrik Lundqvist has won 300 games all with the same team.
  • Tonight will be the Hurricanes’ first ever meeting with the Golden Knights. The last time they played an expansion team for the first time was a 2-1 win over Columbus in 2001.
  • Tonight will wrap up the Canes’ fifth back-to-beck set so far on the year. They’ve gone 5-3-1 in their first nine games that are a part of a back-to-back.
  • Last night was Trevor van Riemsdyk’s first multi-point game as a member of the Hurricanes. The right-handed defenseman notched two assists in the losing effort.
  • Speaking of van Riemsdyk, he and Marcus Kruger will play their first game against their former club tonight. (Oh, you don’t remember their long and illustrious careers with Vegas?)
