Game Notes

  • With an assist last night on Sebastian Aho’s goal, Victor Rask has extended his young point streak to three games. Rask is ranked second on the team in scoring with 35 (14 g, 21 a) points.
  • The Hurricanes fought back from a 2-0 deficit last night to send the game to overtime three hours away in Sunrise. A gritty effort was not rewarded as the Panthers put away Carolina in a shootout.
  • Carolina leads all-time against the former division rival Lightning, going 51-47-18-1, but trail on the road at 20-28-9.
  • Tonight’s game marks the third and final meeting between the teams this season, the Hurricanes have gone 1-1-0 thus far with an OT win on December 4th and a regulation loss on New Year’s Eve.
  • Tonight marks the Lightning’s second game since trading their star goaltender Ben Bishop to the Los Angeles Kings. Bishop, perhaps the best goalie the Lightning franchise has ever seen, played 227 games in Tampa Bay.
  • 22-year-old franchise goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy is 2-0-0 against Carolina with a 2.00 GAA in two appearances. Peter Budaj, a goalie acquired in the Ben Bishop trade, is 3-1-1 with a 1.99 GAA and two shutouts against Carolina. I would not be surprised to see him get a start tonight.
  • The Lightning were active at the trade deadline, trading Valtteri Filppula to the Flyers for Mark Streit (and $5 million in cap space, more importantly), then flipping Streit to the Penguins for a fourth-round pick. The Hurricanes, meanwhile...well, you know by now.

Projected Lines and Rosters

Ha! Good luck with that. Although we do know that the Canes will have Patrick Brown and Andrej Nestrasil in the lineup tonight after they were recalled this afternoon (on an emergency basis) to replace the injured (but not concussed) Jeff Skinner and Brock McGinn.
