With the 42nd overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes selected Finnish center Eetu Luostarinen.
It’s the third year in a row where the Hurricanes have gone with a Finnish forward in round two, taking Sebastian Aho in 2015 and Janne Kuokkanen in 2016.
Luostarinen split the 2016-17 season with Kalpa in the Finnish Liiga and Kalpa’s U20 team in the Jr. A SM-liiga. He netted 19 points in 23 games on the U20 team and seven points in 32 games in the Liiga.
He skated for Finland in the U20 World Junior Championships earlier in the year, in which he tallied four assists and five points in seven games.
Luostarinen is listed at 6’2”, 179 pounds.
The Hurricanes have another second round pick at number 52 overall.
Scouting Analysis
A good scouting report on the Canes pick at #42 is located here.
Luostarinen is a bit off the consensus board but there are things to like in his make-up. Solid good size at 6'2", has a good wrist shot and looks to have the high hockey IQ that the Canes look for in their players. You have to trust the scouting on this one, because they have had good success with European second rounders over the last few years.
