With the 104th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft, the Carolina Hurricanes selected Finnish goalie Eetu Makiniemi.
Makiniemi is a 6’2”, 176-pound goalie who suited up for 26 games for the Jokerit U20 team in the Jr. A SM-liiga last season. He posted a 2.68 goals against average and .908 save percentage. He’s the ninth-ranked European goalie prospect in the class, according to Central Scouting.
He could make the jump and play for Jokerit in the KHL next season.
Makiniemi joins a growing group of goalie prospects, including the likes of Callum Booth, Alex Nedeljkovic, Jeremy Helvig, and Jack LaFontaine.
The Hurricanes will select again at picks 166 and 197.
Scouting Analysis
The ninth goalie selected, the Canes pluck Eetu Makiniemi from Jokerit's U20 team. He's a lanky athletic guy at 6'2" and just under 180 pounds. A developmental project, he likely will spend a few more years in Europe before making the trip across the pond. One to watch down the road.
