Williams, Teravainen Goals Lift Hurricanes Over Lightning

The Hurricanes continued their preseason slate Tuesday with a game in Florida against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The onslaught of penalties that we have seen continued right off the hop, as the Canes took a penalty right away, but their kill was an abbreviated one as the Lightning took two penalties of their own to put the Hurricanes on a 4-on-3 advantage.

On that power play, Justin Williams made his presence felt right away. He took a feed from defenseman Trevor Carrick, crept in, and roofed a shot over former Hurricane goaltender Michael Leighton to give the Canes a 1-0 lead. Teuvo Teravainen also picked up an assist on the play.

The parade to the penalty box marched on throughout the duration of the first period, but both teams went scoreless for the rest of the frame.

Then, in the second, it was Teravainen’s turn to turn in a tally of his own. This one, of course, also came on a power play. This time it was Victor Rask picking up the primary assist for his first point of the pre-season. Carrick picked up another helper on this goal as well.

Late in the second period, the Lightning finally beat Canes goaltending prospect Alex Nedeljkovic, who stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced on the night, to narrow the Hurricanes lead down to one.

In the third period, Nedeljkovic was relieved by Callum Booth, who slammed the door in the third, stopping all 11 shots he faced. The Hurricanes held on to claim a 2-1 win and moved to 2-0-0 in the all-important pre-season standings.

The Hurricanes killed 9 out of 10 Tampa Bay power plays while going 2-for-8 on their own man advantage opportunities. The Canes also went 57% on the night in the face-off circles, while the Lightning won the battle on the shot board 26 to 22.

And for those scoring at home, that’s now 13 total slashing penalties in the Hurricanes’ two preseason games.

In what has to be a first, the Canes made a camp cut during a game, assigning goaltender Jeremy Helvig to the Kingston Frontenacs. The camp roster now sits at 53 players heading into Carolina’s return engagement with the Lightning tomorrow night at PNC Arena.

Ron Francis, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has returned goaltender Jeremy Helvig to his junior club, the Kingston Frontenacs (OHL), whose season begins later this week.

The Hurricanes training camp roster is now at 53 players. Carolina continues its 2017-18 preseason schedule on Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning at PNC Arena.
