Welcome to the most chaotic day of the NHL calendar.
The trade deadline is five hours away, and we have you covered here at Canes Country. We’ll have details on all the major trades going down across the league today, and should the Hurricanes get in on the action we’ll go in detail to see what they got, what they traded away, and what impact it will have on the stretch run.
Practice begins at 11:00 a.m. at PNC, and we’re planning to hang around through the 3:00 deadline to get the latest from the team whenever it becomes available. (Now is probably a good time to hit up @CanesCountry on Twitter if you haven’t already.) We’ll have reaction to the day’s events as it happens, posting links and tweets to update this article throughout the day, and of course y’all can carry on conversations in the comments as the deadline draws nearer.
It’s the day where you’re probably “working” and accomplishing next to nothing, so keep it here as we take you right up to 3:00!
10:30 a.m.: We have our first deal of deadline day: Ian Cole heads to the Blue Jackets, meaning that his Senators career lasted one fewer game than James Wisnewski’s with the Hurricanes.
11:10 a.m.: The Canes have been mentioned in a trade rumor for the first time today! (And they were apparently turned down.)
All of the Montreal Canadiens are on the ice for the morning skate. No one missing. Likely Andrew Shaw returns tonight if he’s here past 3pm.

Per Louis Jean, Canes inquired, they don’t want to trade him. https://t.co/ThMap9tmY8

11:38 a.m.: Practice is done, a little early because the team has to catch a flight this afternoon. Everyone was accounted for, so no surprise absences today. Ron Francis is scheduled to meet the media at 3, so he presumably won’t be on the flight.
Meanwhile, it looks like the Ryan Hartman rumors are going to result in nothing from a Canes perspective:
Sounds like CHI/NASH working on something...Ryan Hartman is someone who interest the Predators

12:06 p.m.: Waiver wire news...
Flyers claim Johnny Oduya off NHL waivers
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 26, 2018
#mnwild veteran Chris Stewart has been claimed off waivers by the Calgary #flames, per sources
— Michael Russo (@RussoHockey) February 26, 2018
Colorado claims Mark Alt off waivers from Philly
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 26, 2018
^ Alt is a former Hurricanes draft pick, drafted in the second round in 2010, 53rd overall, 16 spots after Justin Faulk.
And on the other side of the waiver wire:
Appears Jussi Jokinen clears waivers, remains with #CBJ for now.
— George Richards (@GeorgeRichards) February 26, 2018
12:10 p.m.: Predators win the Ryan Hartman sweepstakes.
Hartman plus Hawks' 5th Rd pick in 2018 to Nashville for 1st RD pick in 2018 plus Victor Edjsell plus 4th Rd pick in 2018
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 26, 2018
12:20 p.m.: The St. Louis Blues are officially sellers.
TRADE ALERT: #stlblues have acquired a first-round pick, a fourth-round pick and prospect Erik Foley from Winnipeg in exchange for Paul Stastny.
— St. Louis Blues (@StLouisBlues) February 26, 2018
DETAILS: https://t.co/4FzpuJutnt pic.twitter.com/JYdhFqMkOV
According to Darren Dreger, the Blues will retain 50% of Stastny’s salary, and Stastny waived his NMC to join the Jets.
2:15 p.m.: We had a little bit of a lull (I think the GMs may have been getting lunch, because that’s what I was doing) but two deals just popped up, including one of the big names on the market:
Kane to SJ for a first, prospect and conditional 4th
— Elliotte Friedman (@FriedgeHNIC) February 26, 2018
Ducks confirm deal for winger Jason Chimera, sending Chris Wagner to Islanders.
— Eric Stephens (@icemancometh) February 26, 2018
More details on the Evander Kane trade:
More details on Evander Kane trade, Sabres get 2019 conditional first-round pick, Dan O'Reagan and a 2020 4th Rd pick
— Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) February 26, 2018
Here's the condition of the first-round 2019 pick in the Evander Kane deal: if the Sharks re-sign Kane, it's a first; but if Kane walks into free agency, it's a second-round pick in 2019

2:30 pm: Heading back into PNC Arena for Ron Francis press conference at 3:00 pm. We’ll stream it live on Facebook, check us out here:

2:50 pm: With ten minutes to spare before the bell rings, the Blue Jackets add.
VAN expected to receive Tyler Motte and Jussi Jokinen in exchange for Thomas Vanek going to CBJ.
— Bob McKenzie (@TSNBobMcKenzie) February 26, 2018
2:55 pm: A reminder, a player must be on an AHL roster at 3:00 pm ET today in order to be eligible to be sent down from the NHL any time thereafter for the rest of the season. And with that in mind, Haydn Fleury, Josh Jooris, and Lucas Wallmark have all been assigned to Charlotte as paper transactions to preserve their eligibility for the AHL playoffs.
3:00 pm: Josh Jooris is on his way to Pittsburgh, reportedly for a minor league player to round out depth in Charlotte. Brett will cover the details in a separate article shortly. Also of note, Tomas Tatar is on his way from Detroit to Vegas, and Ryan McDonagh is on his was to Tampa Bay. Details still forthcoming.
Ron Francis is meeting with the media, Brian is covering it Live on Facebook, follow along here:
