Making the Grade
Klas Dahlbeck’s season went about as expected. He was signed to another one year deal last summer as Ron Francis wanted to lock up a solid 7th defenseman while meeting expansion draft requirements, anticipating that a younger guy would come into camp ready to take on a role in the bottom pairing. That player was Haydn Fleury, and Dahlbeck saw most of his action when Fleury was sitting in the press box.
Dahlbeck played a sound defensive game when given his opportunities, making the best of the extra defenseman role and even gaining compliments from Bill Peters on numerous occasions. When drawing into the lineup, Dahlbeck also brought a fiery attitude that the Hurricanes often lack. While Fleury certainly has a higher ceiling, Dahlbeck was a much more defensively sound player this season than the rookie, which allowed for him to step in for 33 games.
An RFA this summer, Dahlbeck has been reported to be signing overseas for next season. Given that there are younger bodies in Charlotte ready to step into his role, a move to Europe is probably a good one for both Dahlbeck and the Hurricanes.
Overall, Klas Dahlbeck was a very solid 7th defensemen, providing defensive stability and a little bit of attitude in his limited ice time this season.
