Traverse City Tournament Day 3: Game Hub, Preview, How to Watch

Final-day seedings are on the line as the Canes face the division-leading Blue Jackets in the third day of competition.

Jamie Kellner

Following a Sunday off day, the Carolina Hurricanes return to the ice for the third of four games in the 2018 Traverse City prospect tournament tonight against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Canes last took the ice on Saturday in a 5-2 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Jackets have been the top team in the tournament thus far, scoring nine goals in just two games and led by forward Sam Vigneault, the tournament’s leading goal scorer with three. Carolina’s Andrei Svechnikov leads the Hurricanes in scoring with three points, tied with 11 other players in the tournament.

The Hurricanes still have a chance to play in tomorrow’s tournament championship game, although it would come down to tiebreakers and requires Carolina to get help from elsewhere tonight. Assuming the tiebreaker scenarios are the same as in the NHL, these are the scenarios in play*:

  • First in division (play in championship game): Win in regulation AND St. Louis win over Chicago
  • Second in division (play in third-place game): Win in OT/SO AND St. Louis win over Chicago; OR Lose in OT/SO AND St. Louis regulation win over Chicago
  • Third in division (play in fifth-place game): Any other outcome

* - If Carolina wins in regulation and Chicago wins at any time, there will be a three-way tie for first place, and the tiebreaker would go to goal differential, which is impossible to predict. Similarly, if both teams lose in regulation, there will be a three-way tie for second.

Enjoy the game!
