Charlotte Checkers Roundup

The Checkers banner raising ceremony was spoiled last Friday as the team dropped a 4-2 decision during their home opener to the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Eetu Luostarinen started the scoring with a goal just five minutes in but Bridgeport would tie the game at one apiece heading into the first intermission. Bridgeport’s Sebastian Aho (no, not that one) scored the lone second period marker.

Gustav Forsling scored his first of the season to tie the game at two in the third period but Bridgeport would quickly retaliate less than a minute later in what would be the eventual game-winning goal. Alex Nedeljkovic finished with 21 saves on 24 shots.

In their second game of the week, the Checkers got back in the win column with a strong 4-1 win over Bridgeport on Saturday. Anton Forsberg lead the way with 28 saves on 29 shots and Morgan Geekie scored a pair of goals over the first two periods to pull the Checkers ahead. Brian Gibbons scored his first of the season and as a Checker to put the Checkers up three before Bridgeport cut the lead to two after Arnaud Durandeau found the back of the net.

Charlotte will take on Utica on the road on Friday before heading to Syracuse on Saturday to take on the Crunch.

Swamp Rabbits Roundup

The Hurricanes ECHL affiliate still has yet to play a game but it doesn’t mean they haven’t been busy. The team made two trades, sending Jake Bolton to the Worcester Railers (New York Islanders) for future considerations and sent J.C. Brassard to the Utah Grizzlies (Colorado Avalanche) for future considerations as well.

Adam Rockwood was re-assigned by the Springfield Thunderbirds to the Swamp Rabbits and Kamerin Nault was released from his PTO with the Manitoba Moose. Nault scored 12 goals in just 20 games with Greenville last season.

Greenville begins their season on Friday, in a weekend of three straight games. The Jaksonville Icemen come to town on Friday then Greenville hits the road to take on the Atlanta Gladiators before returning home to take on the Gladiators again on Sunday.
