Game Notes

  • This is the first of three games between the Hurricanes and Sabres this season. The remaining two games will be played in a home-and-home on March 15 (Buffalo) and 17 (Raleigh).
  • The Hurricanes are 84-96-6 with 18 ties in franchise history against the Sabres, and were part of the same division from 1979 until 1998. Carolina is 36-54-4 with seven ties in Buffalo, and 38-32-6 with two ties since moving to Ralegh.
  • The last three seasons have seen the Canes own the Sabres to the tune of three straight season sweeps. The nine straight wins against Buffalo mark the longest winning streak in franchise history against one opponent. Their last loss to the Sabres came in March of 2016.
  • Andrei Svechnikov has eight multi-point games this season, one more than he had all of last season. He’s tied for fifth in the league in that category with some guys named Matthews, McDavid and Marchand.
  • Nino Niederreiter has two hat tricks in his NHL career. Both of them came against the Sabres, in 2014 and 2018.

Storm Advisory

  • Posting this again if you didn’t see it yesterday, because it’s outstanding: Paul Maurice’s appreciation of soon-to-be-inductee Hall of Famer Jim Rutherford. [The Athletic ($)]
  • Yesterday was World Kindness Day, and the Hurricanes celebrated with a twitter thread:
  • The UNC club hockey team needs new goalie equipment after their goalie’s gear was stolen. Can you help?
  • Why are the Devils’ good players bad (*cough* Taylor Hall) and the bad players good? Good read here, and applicable to just about every team at one time or another. [All About the Jersey]
  • Nothing about the Hurricanes in this week’s 31 Thoughts, but we wouldn’t be a hockey site if we didn’t link to it, so here it is. [Sportsnet]
