Canes Country’s 2019 Playoff Pick ‘Em Challenge: Round 2

New, comments

After the wackiest first round anyone has ever seen, what does the second round have in store?

Embrace the chaos.

For the first time in the history of the four major American sports, all four division winners were eliminated in the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As a result, the CC Pick ‘Em is all over the map after Round 1.

Not a single person picked the Blue Jackets to beat the Lightning, the first time we’ve ever had a complete shutout in a single round (and we’ve been doing this since 2013!). If you went chalk, you’re probably down near the bottom of the scoreboard. And if you went off the boards, chances are you were rewarded.

The wackiness was everywhere. Zero people took the Blue Jackets. Eight took the Avalanche. The Stars had 13 picks. The Islanders had 19. You might have had better luck if you had just thrown darts at a wall, because any semblance of conventional wisdom was completely missing. NHL dot com’s bracket challenge even came up with a second-chance entry this year, because so many people had busted brackets (thanks, Lightning!). No second chances here, though.

There were 48 points available in round 1. No one even got halfway to that number this year. Here’s how the standings look.

Now, onto the second round, where the points increase (and, in theory, so does the level of difficulty to pick the winners, although this year that probably doesn't apply). If you didn’t play in the first round, it’s not too late to enter the contest! The basics, for your refreshment:

  • Make a selection for each second round series in the comments of this post: who wins, and in how many games.
  • In the second round, you’ll get two points for each winning team you correctly pick. If you pick both the correct team and the correct series length, you’ll also get five bonus points.
  • Because of the quick turnaround to the start of the second round, you will have until the start of the second day’s games (so Friday, April 26 at 7:00 p.m.) to comment with your picks. The comments will close at that time. If you post after the first game of any series begins, your pick for that series will not count.

Please post your picks in the following order:

Eastern Conference
(M2) New York Islanders vs. (WC1) Carolina Hurricanes
(A2) Boston Bruins vs. (WC2) Columbus Blue Jackets

Western Conference
(C3) St. Louis Blues vs. (WC1) Dallas Stars
(P2) San Jose Sharks vs. (WC2) Colorado Avalanche

Here are the Canes Country staff picks for the second round. Good luck!
