Hurricane Tracking 1/15/20: Job Approval Tracking Poll

New, comments

The Hurricanes have been treading water since the start of the year. Will it affect their poll numbers?

There’s plenty of evidence that the Carolina Hurricanes’ general popularity is relatively unaffected by stretches of subpar play. Sure, occasional dips are expected, and every once in a while a survey number might come out of left field entirely, but for the most part things have been relatively sunny this season.

Which leads us to this week’s edition of Hurricane Tracking, and a chance to see if that theory holds up. The Canes are a .500 team since the start of 2020, and since the end of the long western road trip (nearly a month ago!) they’re actually a game under .500, strange as that sounds. Goaltending has kept them afloat, but the offense has dried up and the bye week looming a week from now must look like an oasis in the desert for the players, who have looked like they need a break for a couple of weeks now.

So, how has that affected things? We’ll find out, but first we have FanPulse business to attend to.

Last week’s FanPulse survey was a repeat of one from the first part of the year, and the answers have changed pretty significantly:

Last time it was asked: Blue Jackets 61.2%, Islanders 31.6%, Jets 23.4%, Stars 20.9%, Sharks 19.4%. So, uh...welcome to the party, Nashville?

Also, only 3% of respondents had the Hurricanes missing the playoffs, so everything’s good there. (Right?)

Last time it was asked: Oilers 41.6%, Sabres 32.2% (welp), Flyers 24.4%, Panthers 21.2%, Canadiens 20.5%.

The next FanPulse survey will be emailed next Wednesday. If you haven’t signed up yet, now is a great time to do so to participate in the new survey - and do it now, because following the All-Star break our own site’s Hurricanes tracking polls will become part of FanPulse and only registered users will be able to participate in the voting. Sign up now and you won’t miss a beat!

Now, onto the weekly Canes polls. First up, here’s how the approval ratings have trended since we started polling back in September:

Also from the last series of polls:

  • Outdoor game potential opponent preference: Capitals 75%, Predators 10%, Islanders 6%, Bruins 6%, others 4%
  • Who should get another All-Star bid: Andrei Svechnikov 39%, Teuvo Teravainen 38%, Sebastian Aho 22%
  • How many Metro teams will make the playoffs: 61% five, 35% four, 4% three
  • Grade the Canes’ 2019 calendar year: 63% A, 36% B, 1% C
