Game Notes
- The Hurricanes and Jets are meeting for the second and final matchup this season. The Canes picked up a 6-3 win against the Jets in Winnipeg on December 17. Andrei Svechnikov scored his second lacrosse-style goal of the season, and Sebastian Aho picked up a pair of goals to reach the 20-goal mark.
- Justin Williams made his NHL season debut on Sunday against the Islanders. At 38 years old, Williams is the eighth-oldest player in franchise history to appear in a regular season game. He joins six other current NHL players in the 38-plus club; can you name them all?
- Williams scored his fifth career-shootout-deciding goal on Sunday in his debut. It marked his first shootout goal since 2013, and his first shootout deciding goal since 2011.
- Jake Gardiner played in his 600th career NHL game vs. the Islanders, and became the 23rd skater and 14th blueliner from the 2008 draft class to reach that milestone.
- With a goal on Sunday, Andrei Svechnikov has earned 43 points in 49 games, and sits just one goal behind the 20 goal milestone. The Canes are 22-7-0 when he records a point, and are 6-11-3 when he is held scoreless.
Storm Advisory
- The 2020 NHL Player Poll was published yesterday. The Hurricanes aren’t mentioned much, with the exception of one rather hilarious aside. [The Athletic]
- Why is the NHL so different defensively this season? [TSN]
- John Forslund jumped on the David Glenn show yesterday, and talked about why the loss of Dougie Hamilton could be a blessing in disguise for the rest of the roster. [Hipcast]
- Well, alright then.
Ilya Kovalchuk never considered going home this Winter (confirmed by Omsk prez) and his intention is to stay in the NHL until he gets to the Cup #gohabsgo

- Goaltending makes no sense.
The Columbus Blue Jackets had their goalie walk for $70 million this summer, are paying their three goalies less than $3 million combined this season, and now have the 2nd best 5v5 save % and 3rd best save % overall
