Hurricane Tracking 1/29/20: Job Approval Tracking Poll

It’s a bye week, but there are still plenty of Hurricanes takes out there waiting to be unearthed.

All week, the Carolina Hurricanes - at least, those who are not named Jaccob Slavin and spent part of the bye week in St. Louis - have been posting to social media from various and sundry ports of call, mostly in the Caribbean and surrounding areas, and all of which feature brilliant sunshine, blue water, and generally positive vibes.

(We pause for a moment to note a they’re-just-like-us moment when Martin Necas and Andrei Svechnikov were flying back to Raleigh, as featured in Storm Advisory this morning. Airlines, to no one’s surprise, do not discriminate when it comes to suffering through poor on-time performance.)

But here at the Canes Country home office, we’ve been faithfully chugging along, and now it’s time to see if the fanbase’s opinion is as sunny as the outposts that the team has spent the last week enjoying.

Before we get going, a couple of notes. You’ll notice that the “right or wrong track” question is missing from today’s polls, and that’s because that question was asked in a FanPulse mailing earlier today. Remember when we said that things would be shifting platforms? This is the first step in making that happen. Registering for FanPulse surveys will now allow you to participate in both team-based and leaguewide surveys! So make sure to sign up now and you’ll get the survey email next Wednesday. Beginning this week, FanPulse surveys will alternate weeks between team-based and leaguewide surveys every Wednesday.

And in that same ballpark, going forward we will not move our entire polling to FanPulse, but the most interesting questions will be there. You’ll still be able to take part in Hurricane Tracking polls even if you don’t sign up; there just won’t be as many of them in the future. (So sign up now!)

Last week’s FanPulse question asked for the biggest snub from the All-Star Game, and for all of you yelling into the wind that Sebastian Aho should have gotten a round-trip flight to St. Louis last week, it turns out that a lot of other fans from around the league agree with you.

Now, onto the weekly Canes polls. First up, here’s how the approval ratings have trended since we started polling back in September:

One thing that’s been very interesting about this exercise since September is how volatile Rod Brind’Amour’s approval ratings are. Tom Dundon and Don Waddell haven’t gone below 95% at all, while Brind’Amour’s have dipped down significantly twice, both of which line up with periods of subpar play on the ice. It seems that the coach takes a lot more heat than the front office when things aren’t going to according to plan. (Peter Laviolette and Gerard Gallant slowly nod their head in agreement.)

Also from the last series of polls:

  • Justin Williams contract approval rating: 92%
  • Whose spot should Williams take: Brock McGinn 48%, Nino Niederreiter 31%, someone else 19% (mostly Jordan Martinook), Warren Foegele 2%
  • By the end of the season, how many trades for roster players do you think the Hurricanes will have made: one 64%, zero 23%, two 13%, three or more 0%
  • Preferred first-round opponent: Islanders 52%, Atlantic Division champion 19%, Penguins 14%, Capitals 13%, other 3%
  • Best part of Whalers Night: Throwback uniforms 47%, 80s soundtrack 21%, John Forslund’s sweater 18%, Brass Bonanza 11%, throwback scoreboard graphics 4%
  • Right/wrong track: 90% right track
