Welcome to Round One of the 2020 NHL Draft. What should we to expect to see tonight as the Carolina Hurricanes head into the evening holding the 13th overall pick?
On defense, perhaps a talented defensive prospect like Jake Bean or a stalwart like Ron Hainsey. Or a skilled forward like one of the two who comprised the infamous SST line of 2013. Or perhaps mirroring last year’s 13th overall selection, a goaltender?
From players selected out of their predicted order to that moment when “we have a trade to announce,” there is always the tease of the unexpected on the draft floor. It’s a bit hard to imagine how different things will feel this evening in the absence of said floor.
In a normal year, all 31 teams would be together in one location where general managers and scouting staff could read the room and actually interact with each other. Will social distancing make this year’s draft more chaotic or will the end result be a typical draft day?
