It’s time for the prospect roundup.
This week is much the same as last, with no new leagues starting up and most other ones maintaining play. In terms of changes to the list, a few players returned to action from last week, but a few other players will now be missing extended time.
Again, I will try to provide comments on some players, but not all, and this can range from passing comments or trends to analysis if I end up catching a game live.

Liiga
Assat (Lenni Killinen)
- Killinen is still out with an injury he sustained in September.
Ilves (Eetu Makiniemi)
Makiniemi’s biggest roadblock, Lukas Dostal, has been recalled to North America meaning there should be plenty of playing time ahead for him. Registering his first career shutout on Saturday, it seems that Makiniemi may be able to make the most of this opportunity.

JYP (Patrik Puistola; Anttoni Honka)
Honka has found himself playing on JYP’s top pair after an internal move, so he is still learning to handle the extra responsibility. His offensive skills are apparent, but the defensive side needs the most work.
Puistola has been getting steady time including on the power play which is impressive for a 19 year old. He is continuing to develop on a steady pace in Liiga.

Spartak Moscow (Alexander Nikishin)
Nikishin was pulled from his last game on Nov. 22 after reportedly having discomfort in his upper body. Doctors have been careful with Nikishin as he has a minor heart abnormality. He was not cleared to return to action for Spartak’s next game on Nov. 24 and he was still ineligible for their match on Nov. 29.
Vityaz Podolsk (Pyotr Kochetkov)
Kochetkov has still yet to get into a game since September. This doesn’t bode well for his development and may mean that the Canes will need to intervene and bring him to North America whether on a loan to the ECHL or in the AHL if those seasons can be played.
VHL
Buran Voronezh (Kirill Slepets)
Slepets finally returned after missing all of November and jumped right into a solid workload. Hopefully we can see more of him develop moving forward.

Tulpar Ufa (Alexander Pashin)

NCAA
Penn State (Kevin Wall)
Getting the bump up to the top line, Wall is getting plenty of chances offensively and he is burying them. However, Penn State has been getting lit up to start the season, losing four straight with an average of five goals against per game.

First line; 7 Shots
University of Minnesota (Jack LaFontaine)
LaFontaine is quickly developing in as one of the Hurricanes’ most exciting goalie prospects. With four straight wins to kick off the season, LaFontaine capped off the week with his first career collegiate shutout. While it may have taken a long time for him to get comfortable, he seems to be coming into his own lately.
- 11/23: 4-1 W
16 Saves; 0.941 S%; 1 GA
- 11/24: 2-0 W

Boston University (Domenick Fensore; Cade Webber)
No Games till at least Dec. 11
American International College (Jacob Kucharski)
Due to his status as a redshirt freshman, the odds we see any game action for Kucharski this year is slim to none.
USHL
Des Moines Buccaneers (Lucas Mercuri)
Another Canes prospect moving up to the top line, Mercuri is consistently producing in the USHL and will be interesting to keep on eye on when he transitions to college at UMass.

- 11/29: 1-0 W

QMJHL
Shawinigan Cataractes (Vasiliy Ponomarev)
Ponomarev has been not only dominant on the scoresheet, but has also been a force in the faceoff dot in the Q. He is developing well as a two-way center and may be one of the most intriguing prospects as his style seems to be one that Rod Brind’Amour will love. Ponomarev flew back to Russia on Nov. 26 to take part in their WJC camp.
