The Carolina Hurricanes announced on Wednesday that the 2021 Stadium Series game, scheduled for February 20 at Carter-Finley Stadium, has been postponed on account of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“While we are extremely disappointed that we will not be able to host an outdoor game this season, the health and safety of our fans remains our top priority,” Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell said in a statement. “We look forward to hosting the game in the near future and rewarding our incredible fanbase with an unforgettable experience.”

The state of North Carolina currently allows large event venues to operate at 7% capacity, which would limit attendance at Carter-Finley to slightly more than 4,000. The Hurricanes were one of the teams that had explored hosting regular-season games outdoors, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, but determined that it would not be cost-effective.

The opponent for the Stadium Series game had not been announced. No future date was given for the event, although the game will be rescheduled. The release from the team is below.

2021 NAVY FEDERAL CREDIT UNION NHL STADIUM SERIES GAME POSTPONED
Outdoor game at Carter-Finley Stadium to be rescheduled

The National Hockey League today announced that the 2021 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series™ game, originally scheduled to be played at NC State’s Carter-Finley Stadium on Feb. 20, 2021, has been postponed.

“While we are extremely disappointed that we will not be able to host an outdoor game this season, the health and safety of our fans remains our top priority,” said Hurricanes President and General Manager Don Waddell. “We look forward to hosting the game in the near future and rewarding our incredible fanbase with an unforgettable experience.”

The Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series™ will be the 12th NHL Stadium Series game and the 32nd NHL regular-season outdoor game overall. The event will mark the first time the Hurricanes have participated in an outdoor game. Carter-Finley Stadium will become the sixth college football facility to host one of the NHL’s outdoor games, joining Michigan Stadium, Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium (Navy), TCF Bank Stadium (University of Minnesota), Notre Dame Stadium and Falcon Stadium (Air Force).
