The Carolina Hurricanes are Actually Bad. No, wait, they aren’t. But they’re a top-ten team in the league! But they’re out of the playoffs! But, but, but, but...!!!!
Is it enough to make your head spin? That’s why we have Hurricane Tracking.
Now that we’re past the bye week and All-Star break, the Hurricanes have just under two months to get their act together and book a return visit to the Stanley Cup Playoffs. While things may not be quite as rosy as they were this time last year, one would think that the playoff run last year bought a little bit of leeway, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
First up: FanPulse surveys, and remember, registering for FanPulse surveys will now allow you to participate in both team-based and leaguewide surveys! Now that we’re asking team-based questions in FanPulse, we get spiffy graphics, like these:

That confidence question is a regular one that will be asked every two weeks going forward, and one went out today. We’ll have the results for that question in two weeks.
Now, onto the weekly Canes polls. First up, here’s how the approval ratings have trended since we started polling back in September:

It’s the first sustained run of “poor” polling over the last two surveys for Rod Brind’Amour, to the extent that 90% approval is in any way “poor,” but it reflects the skepticism that the Canes will be able to turn things around and grab a playoff spot. One wonders how long the swoon will last, and if the Canes turn it around, how quickly Rod’s rating will bounce back.
This week, you’ll notice some repeat questions from earlier in the season. Since this is the last poll before the trade deadline, we’re going to revisit some of the trade-related questions we’ve asked in previous weeks.
Also from the last series of polls:
- How should the Hurricanes handle Dougie Hamilton’s injury: 34% callup from Charlotte, 34% trade for a defenseman, 31% go with players on the roster (I didn’t expect it to be this close; the top two were tied with 101 votes apiece)
- On Hamilton’s injury changing things: 76% thought they’d make it and still do; 20% thought they’d make but now think they’ll miss; 3% thought they’d miss and still do; 1% though tthey’d make but now think they’ll miss
- Who/what would you be willing to trade now: 33% draft pick, 30% current roster player, 22% minor league player, 8% prospect, 7% none of the above
- How many points will be needed for a playoff spot: 42% 99-100, 32% 97-98, 13% 101 or more, 11% 95-96, 2% 94 or fewer
And with that, here are this week’s poll questions:
