Let’s be honest: when we started tracking these things in September, we knew there would be some weeks where we were light on poll content. And then there would be weeks like this one, where the Carolina Hurricanes went on a Leeroy Jenkins-level trading frenzy.
Needless to say, this isn’t a lean week of content. (And yes, it’s on a Thursday, a day later than usual. Life gets in the way sometimes.)
The Hurricanes have been nearly unanimously praised in the national media for their work at the trade deadline, but the response among Canes fans themselves has been decidedly more mixed. Is that a case of a silent majority not wading into the firing line on social media, or does the reaction in the world at large track with the superheated hot takes that tend to populate the likes of Twitter and message boards?
We’re about to find out. But first, some housekeeping. Our FanPulse questions from two weeks ago were based around the trade deadline, and for the most part the FanPulse voters got things right, although in retrospect setting the over/under on deadline day transactions at 15 was selling it way short.

(Hey, the Hurricanes were one of the three teams to move a first-rounder on deadline day! And Jean-Gabriel Pageau, Brady Skjei and Barclay Goodrow will be an answer to a heck of a trivia question one day.)
Now, onto the weekly Canes polls. First up, here’s how the approval ratings have trended since we started polling back in September:

Yeah, now we’ve got a trend for Rod Brind’Amour, for sure. What intrigues me is where Don Waddell will land after the deadline. The low (or, at least, lower) grade was, I’d imagine, in part a reaction to the Canes not acting immediately to shore up their defense after Dougie Hamilton’s injury. Well, they did that - and then some - on Monday. Will it affect Waddell’s job approval rating?

- Position most in need of addressing at the deadline: 42% defending, 31% goaltending, 25% scoring, 2% other (??)

- Most likely to trade for: 53% an NHL player with term, 22% a rental, 2% a prospect or draft pick, 11% more than one of the above, 12% none of the above
