For the first time in almost one full month, the Carolina Hurricanes had back-to-back off days heading into their late-afternoon bout with the Florida Panthers.

The rest will be much-needed as they host a Florida team that has pushed them to their limit in all three head-to-head matchups to this point. Carolina has been on the winning side of two of those three games, but each game has gone to overtime.

Rod Brind’Amour spoke to the media early Sunday morning, and he announced a few lineup notes.

James Reimer will get the net as the Canes continue to alternate between him and Alex Nedlejkovic until Petr Mrazek returns to the lineup. Reimer stopped 28 of 31 shots, and the Canes recorded a 4-3 shootout win in the veteran’s lone start against the Cats this year.

Teuvo Teravainen, who on Thursday played in his first game since being knocked out of the lineup due to a concussion, is a game-time decision. Jake Gardiner will return to the lineup after missing five games with an upper-body injury.

Game Notes

  • The Hurricanes are looking to win their fifth straight game today. It would be their second winning streak of five games this season (January 18 - February 2)
  • Carolina is 10-3-0 in games that James Reimer has started this season and won his only start against Florida this year (4-3 SOW on February 27). Over his last six starts, he has a .916 save percentage.
  • Vincent Trocheck has burned his former team in every head-to-head matchup this season. He has three goals in three games against them. Two of those three goals were game-tying goals in the third period. Trocheck is tied for sixth in the NHL in goal-scoring (12).
  • The Hurricanes and Panthers remain neck-and-neck in the Discover NHL® Central Division. Despite having one less win, Florida has a one-point edge over Carolina (34 to 33) and both clubs have played 23 games. The Discover NHL® Central Division-leading Tampa Bay Lightning have also recorded 34 points, but they’ve played one less game. The Bolts will play the Chicago Blackhawks this afternoon at 2:30 pm. If Tampa Bay loses in regulation, the winner of the Carolina/Florida game will be the new Discover NHL® Central Division leader for the day before being inevitably dethroned tomorrow.
  • Martin Necas has played the grim reaper role for Florida in both of Carolina’s wins this season. He scored the game-winning shootout goal on February 27 and the game-winning goal in overtime on March 1. Starting with his three-point night on March 1, Necas has points in three straight games (two goals, four assists, six points).
  • After losing back-to-back games to the Hurricanes, the Panthers swept the Predators in their two-game set in Nashville.
  • Florida defenseman Keith Yandle is slated to play in his 890th consecutive game today. He owns the longest active games played streak in the NHL and the third-longest streak in league history. It will also be his 1000th NHL game.
