The Carolina Hurricanes return home tonight for the first time since clinching a spot in the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs and take on the Detroit Red Wings for the eighth and final time this season. The Hurricanes have seven games remaining in the regular season, and are looking to lock up the top spot in the Central Division and capture the President’s Trophy.
The Canes have had a tough time this season against the Red Wings, going only 3-3-1 against the Wings so far. The Canes are 0-2-1 in their last three games against Detroit.
Carolina will look to keep up its point streak that has now reached eight games, matching the longest of the season when they went 8-0-0 from Feb. 27-March 4. The Hurricanes swept a two-game series with the Nashville Predators at home before going 3-0-3 on their recent six-game road trip.
Detroit’s trade deadline acquisition, Jakub Vrana, formerly of the Washington Capitals, will be making his debut against the Hurricanes this season.

Game Notes
- Special teams has been a big part of the Canes’ success this season, and that didn’t change during their road trip. Carolina was 2-3 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill in their last game against Dallas. They are still the top-ranked power play in the NHL at 27.7% and they are third on the penalty kill at 84.3%.
- Head coach Rod Brind’Amour will coach in his 200th game as head coach of the Hurricanes tonight. He has a 116-64-19 record as head coach and is the first head coach in franchise history to clinch a postseason berth in each of his first three seasons behind the bench.
- Morgan Geekie has recorded five assists in the last seven games. He had only one assist in his first 24 NHL games and had never recorded an assist in back-to-back games until accomplishing it against Dallas earlier in the week.
- After going 3-0-3 on their road trip, the Hurricanes finished a road trip of at least six games with at least a point in every game for the first time in franchise history.
- Max McCormick scored a goal in back-to-back games for the first time in his NHL career. He had previously recorded a point in consecutive games in Feb. 2018 with Ottawa.
- Two other milestones are taking place tonight in addition to Rod Brind’Amour’s 200th game behind the bench. Brett Pesce is playing in his 400th career game and Andrei Svechnikov is playing in his 200th career game.
