The Hurricanes enter the start of the new league year with a number of holes to fill on their roster.

The 2021-22 NHL season officially begins today with the opening of free agency at 12:00 p.m. ET.

The Carolina Hurricanes could potentially enter the new league year with a number of holes to fill. The team needs two goalies, likely at leas two defensemen and two forwards. Unrestricted free agents Dougie Hamilton, Brock McGinn, Cedric Paquette, Jordan Martinook, Jani Hakanpaa, Petr Mrazek, Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer remain unsigned.

Hamilton is one of, if not the biggest names on this year’s market. Don Waddell said Saturday the team had a deadline with the top-pairing defenseman, and would need to get him signed before free agency opens. The clock is ticking, in other words. It doesn’t look good for Hamilton to remain in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes also need NHL two goalies, assuming they’re not able to come to terms with two of Mrazek, Bernier or Reimer by noon.

The team has already been linked to a few players through rumors:

We’re keeping a running tab of today’s transactions, with separate articles to follow regarding any Hurricanes-related transactions and interviews.

Multiple broadcasters will provide all-day live coverage including NHL Network, TSN, ESPN+ and Sirius XM NHL and we’ll pass along any live streams or simulcasts.

As a friendly reminder, and we can’t say this enough so we’re putting it in gigantic letters:

LOOK FOR THE BLUE CHECK MARK

Seriously. Don’t get hoodwinked by a con artist. Double and triple check your sources (my best practice is to create a twitter list of all the relevant NHL pundits so I know if the tweet is in the list it should be valid). Today is not the day to proliferate fake news.

Storm Advisory

A few news nuggets to read, watch and listen to this morning as we’re waiting for things to kick off.

  • Marc-Andre Fleury, the reigning Vezina Trophy, is headed to the Chicago Blackhawks. It was obviously a move made with the salary cap in mind, but it was still a bit of a surprise to see the reigning Vezina Trophy winner get traded for next to nothing. The trade apparently came as a surprise to Fleury, who doesn’t yet know if he’ll report to Chicago. Retirement could be on the table. [Chicago Sun Times]
  • One of the players available today has a familiar name

Alex Ovechkin is back in DC for five more years

  • Gabriel Landeskog is staying in Colorado
  • Washington sent Brenden Dillon to Winnipeg
  • The United States appears to have a coach for the 2022 Olympics
