Head coach Rod Brind’Amour said that his team played a perfect first period as they dominated much of the play while skating to a 1-0 lead. The Canes were outshooting the Lightning, 8-1 to start things off.

Then just 31 seconds into the second period, Andrei Svechnikov got his stick in between his opponent’s legs and he was promptly called for a penalty, the seventh straight game in which this happened.

A minute later, Steven Stamkos rifled in an open shot from the slot to tie things up and then there was no stopping the Bolts as they seemed to almost score at will.

The Lightning finished the night going four of five on the powerplay as Brayden Point scored a hat trick and Nikita Kucherov set a Tampa Bay record with a six point night, (2G 4A).

Kucherov now has 15 goals and 20 assists for the season.

Noesen and Bunting had the goals for the Canes as the first three lines, other than a Svechnikov assist, failed to dent the score sheet.

Antti Raanta had a rough night and finished making six saves on 14 shots. In his defense, the first couple of goals were off wide open shots, but he did not look like his normal self in this one.

When asked post game if he considered pulling his goalie, Brind’Amour replied-

“It wasn’t like they were all his fault. The first four were open bombs and a weird bounce on the one. And the other thing was, you don’t want to put Kooch in a bad spot. It’s half way through the game and you don’t want to do that either. After the fifth one I probably should have taken him out but the game was over at that point.”

The Canes will close out their home stand as they take on the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes were credited with just 4 hits in the game. Orlov had two. The Lightning had 18.
  • Carolina went one for six with the man advantage. Bunting scored his goal off a face off.
