For two and a half periods, the Carolina Hurricanes could not find the back of the net no matter how hard they tried, but with 10 minutes gone in the third they finally broke through and then scored twice more as they defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night, 3-2 at the PNC Arena.

The win gives the team a 12-8-0 record as they finished up their five game homestand at 3-2-0.

The win did not come easy as the Jackets scored twice in the third to open up a 2-0 lead, though Pyotr Kochetkov was playing well for the home team. The goalie made one diving poke check which was a joy to watch, which probably saved a goal.

In the third, Coach Brind’Amour changed up the lines a bit, moving Svechnikov with Aho and Jarvis, and Teravainen with Kotkaneimi and Necas. The change seemed to spark the team a bit as the quality of their chances started to improve.

After the game, Brind’Amour gave assistant coach Jeff Daniels credit for the change up.

Things got started for Carolina when Teravainen made a pretty pass to Kotkaneimi and the center lifted the puck perfectly just under the crossbar for Carolina’s first goal.

With just under four minutes to play, Brady Skjei knocked in a loose puck and the game was tied.

Aho then fed Svechnikov for the game winner with just 1:55 left. The goal was the Russian’s first of the year and first since his return from injury.

Obviously, a huge factor in this game was that the Hurricanes did not commit a single penalty. After an atrocious result in the previous game, the PK unit had the night off in this one.

Next up for Carolina will be a game in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.

Game Notes:

  • The Canes outshot the Jackets 43-23. Svechnikov and Necas led the way with six each.
  • After a slow start, the home team won the battle in the faceoff circle with a 55% percentage. Aho led the way in this stat.
  • Pesce had a team high three blocked shots.
  • Skjei and Burns played 22:04 and 21:57 respectively.
