The Carolina Hurricanes fell behind 3-0, but never gave up and kept the pressure on before overcoming the New York Islanders in overtime at the UBS Arena on Saturday night.
Jesperi Kotkaniemi tied the score with four minutes and change in the third and then Sebastian Aho won it with a slick shot in the extra period.
The win moves the Canes to a 7-5-0 record and drops the Islanders to 5-3-2.
Carolina was outshooting the home team in every period but could not solve hot goaltender, Ilya Sorokin who was making save after save.
In the meantime, Antti Raanta was playing well in his own right but was facing some tough chances, including a two on zero opportunity as the Islanders scored an easy shorthanded chance.
Jalen Chatfield scored his first of the season to make the score 3-1 with 11 minutes and change left in the second.
Dmitry Orlov then scored his first as a Hurricane and his first of the season to make it 3-2, with 7:41 left in the third.
At this point Carolina was swarming in the Islanders zone and it looked like they were finally getting to Sorokin.
Just three minutes later, Kotkaniemi took a sweet pass from Svechnikov from behind the net to tie the score. Carolina’s second line center had an assist earlier and now has 12 points in 12 games for the season.
Antti Raanta made a tough save to start things off in overtime but then Martin Necas set up Aho, who beat Sorokin five-hole to win the game.
The Canes had 47 shots on goal compared to 25 for New York.
The Hurricanes were only called for two penalties in this game. The Islanders were called four times.
Carolina returns home for a game against the Sabres on Tuesday night.
