Game Preview: Golden Knights at Hurricanes

Canes look to get back on track against defending Stanley Cup champs.

NHL: Washington Capitals at Carolina Hurricanes James Guillory-USA TODAY Sports

The Hurricanes host the defending Stanley Cup champion Golden Knights tonight in PNC Arena.

Tonight’s matchup comes on the heels of Sunday’s shootout loss to the Capitals, marking two straight OT losses for Carolina (16-12-3). On the other end, Vegas (21-6-5) enters the night starting a four-game road trip in Raleigh.

The Canes will have their work cut out for them against the Golden Knights, who hold an impressive 6-1-1 record for the month of December. Carolina’s struggled in that same time span at 3-4-2, but the grueling two-week road trip earlier in the month gives cause to take that record with a grain of salt.

The possible return of Andrei Svechnikov to the lineup would go a long way towards taking down the Golden Knights. Svechnikov suffered an upper-body injury against Winnipeg back on Dec. 4, but returned to practice with the team yesterday.

Whether he’ll actually hit the ice remains to be seen, but Svech seems keen to get back out there ASAP to give his team a boost.
