The Carolina Hurricanes shut down the Montreal Canadiens in the third period and powered their way to a 5-3 win on Thursday night at the PNC Arena.

Sebastian Aho had his second consecutive four point night and Andrei Svechnikov scored a hat trick to lead the home team.

The Canes jumped out well in the first period and took a 2-0 lead just past the midway point, but the Habs answered with two goals themselves, the last with just four seconds left in the period.

Jesper Fast gave the Canes the lead again early in the second period on a perfect one-timer off of a Stefan Noesen pass. It was a two goal game for Fast, who knocked in a rebound in the opening period as well.

The Canadiens started off the third period with a breakaway goal just 25 seconds in, but they would only be able to get one more shot on goal the rest of the game.

Svechnikov scored the only other goals in the third, one was a 170 foot empty net powerplay goal to close out the game.

Antti Raanta picked up the win, his first since November. He made 18 saves on 21 shots.

The Hurricanes will next take on the Leafs in Toronto on Saturday night.
