The Canes have a “flat” game in Pittsburgh.

Jake Guentzel’s return to Pittsburgh went very well for the home team and their fans but not very well for the visitors as the Hurricanes lost, 4-1 to the Penguins on Tuesday night.

Rod Brind’Amour labeled his team’s performance as “flat”. He also mentioned that his team needed to get to the front of the net.

“We’ve got to score more than one.....We were flat tonight, that’s for sure.”

The Canes did manage 39 shots on goal, compared to 22 for the Pens, but they were mostly harmless shots that former Carolina goalie Alex Nedeljkovic stopped easily.

Another former Cane, Jesse Puljujarvi opened the scoring early in the second period.

Dmitry Orlov tied things up with a shot from the point. Coincidentally, the Canes did have some net presence for that shot.

That lone goal would end the scoring for Carolina.

The Pens made the score 2-1 later in the period and then added two open net scores at the end of the game.

Next up for Carolina will be a home tilt against Detroit on Thursday night.

Game Notes:

The Canes had 39 shots on goal, 27 shots that missed the net, and 21 shots that were blocked. That is a total of 87 shots taken compared to 43 for Pittsburgh. (22-11-10)

Burns and Guentzel led the way with six shots on goal each.

Aho had a team high 22:14 of ice time.

Each team went 0-2 on the powerplay.

The red hot Hurricanes come into the Steel City for some reunions

We’ve blinked and the grind of the regular season is almost over.

Starting tonight the Canes have yet another three games in five days stretch—in Pittsburgh, hosting Detroit, and then up to Montreal. After that, though, they finally get a longer break to catch their breath. Once the Montreal trip is completed they have no more games for four days, and those next three—while a three in four day stretch—are all at home. It’s a real breath that this squad likely needs both for health and for actual practice.

The question is, does the team look at this stretch coming up and their game slip? Or do we see more of this current squad that has grabbed points in seven straight, winning six of them? Almost all of those wins were against clear playoff teams and now with the break in site they have three games against teams that are either fading or out of it completely.

Do they they a breath as Rod Brind’Amour would say?

We’ll get our first answers tonight against Pittsburgh. The Pens are nine points out of the wild card spot with twelve games left, so while not functionally eliminated in spirit, they’d have to jump four teams in order to do so. The fact that Jake Guentzel is currently on the Hurricanes roster basically tells you what the Penguins thought of their chances to do just that.

Ah yes, Guentzel. You may have heard that tonight is a big reunion game for him. Remember when he was traded to the Hurricanes, he was still on LTIR so he actually hadn’t been on the ice for Pittsburgh in a while. The fans didn’t get a chance to say good-bye to him—they hope temporarily as he’s a UFA this offseason and the sentiment seems to be they want to sign him back—and clearly something along those lines will be planned tonight. Expect a video thanking him for his time in Pittsburgh to hit early on, and emotions to be on full display.

All emotions aside, the Hurricanes still have a ton to play for. Seven teams are all within a point of each other for the Presidents’ Trophy, and while that particular mark has been a curse more than anything, with the race so tight the winner may see that more as a boost of doing the work it took to go into the playoffs hot. As it is, it’s a prize the Hurricanes have never taken, and home ice advantage throughout the playoffs come with it. Where the Canes end up in the standings also are in such flux to where they could play Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Washington, or Detroit—Carolina’s opponent on Thursday.

Also at stake is a bounce back game for Pytor Kochetkov. The last time the goalie was on the ice was the 7-6 shootout loss against the Capitals on Friday. The Canes exhibited every sign of playing a back-to-back and their third game in four days, giving zero support to Pyotr. He’s 1-1-1 in his last three, with only of the games—the Islanders—showing what fans saw against the Rangers in that 1-0 loss. He’s now getting a team that got three days in Raleigh with an optional skate on Monday, so hopefully that confidence will move over to him.

As for the Penguins, they have lost three straight, the most recent one coming on Sunday in overtime against the Avs. They had a 4-2 lead going into the third period, but then surrendered two in the third and lost in overtime. It was the first time in a while that they showed some fight against one of the top teams in the league. A look at their schedule shows not only losses against fellow Presidents’ Trophy contenders, but lopsided ones at that. They’ve clearly turned the page to building momentum for next year and getting their own new additions comfortable in Pittsburgh before a pretty big offseason.

One of those additions is the current NHLer Pittsburgh acquired as part of the deal, Michael Bunting. Considering Bunting thought he was signing up for a current Stanley Cup Contender and will instead be spending his first playoffs away from the ice in a while, he may want to take tonight personally.

All in all it will be a bit of an odd night. What that means for the product on the ice, we’ll see.

If you aren’t going to be in Pittsburgh to see the action, here’s how you can catch it.

Frederik Andersen stood out as the Canes beat the Leafs on Sunday evening at the PNC.

The Carolina Hurricanes had a strong start and jumped out to an early lead, then held on the rest of the way as they defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 2-1 at the PNC Arena on Sunday night.

Frederik Andersen made 32 saves on 33 shots and picked up another win for Carolina. The goalie is now 6-0-0 since returning from injury.

The Canes remain hot and have now earned points in 10 of their last 11 games, (9-1-1).

Just a minute and change into the game, Brady Skjei opened the scoring with his 12th of the season.

Later in the period, Jake Guentzel was awarded a penalty shot, but was denied.

A bit later, Sebastian Aho scored his 31st of the season on the powerplay. The puck was deflected in, but when you’re hot, you’re hot. Guentzel and Burns had the assists.

The Canes were cooking with a 2-0 lead and they were outshooting the Leafs, 13-7 that period. But the Leafs fought back.

While the visitors were able to muster up 13 shots on goal in the next two periods, they could only solve Andersen once and that was midway through the third.

The Hurricanes had some key penalty kills, of course with Andersen’s help.

The win gave the Hurricanes a three game sweep of the season series with the Eastern Conference contenders.

Next up for Carolina is a trip to Pittsburgh for a game on Tuesday night.

Game Notes:

Jack Drury returned to action and had nine minutes and change of ice time.

The Canes won 56% in the faceoff cuircle.

Carolina outshot Toronto 43-33 and were led by Martinook, Svechnikov, and Necas with five each.

The team had 13 blocked shots led by Pesce with three.

Jarvis played a team high 22:57. His six game scoring streak came to an end but he had an empty net bid that hit the post.

Leafs visit Carolina for Sunday evening match.

The Carolina Hurricanes return home to face the Toronto Maple Leafs for a Sunday game starting at 6 P.M.

The Hurricanes last game was a wild one as they lost in a 7-6 shootout to the Washington Capitals. They now have a 44-20-7 record with 95 points. They are three points behind the first place Rangers.

The Canes are 8-1-1 in their last 10 games.

The Leafs played last night and beat the Oilers, 6-3 at home. They are 6-3-1 in their last 10 and have a 40-20-9 record overall.

The Canes recently came out on top with a rare 5-4 shootout win in Toronto last week.

There was no morning skate for Carolina this morning but look for Frederik Andersen to be back in net for the Canes. He is next in their current goalie rotation.

The game will be televised by Hulu/ESPN plus or listen in on 99.9 The Fan.

WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 22: Sonny Milano #15 of the Washington Capitals scores a goal over the shoulder of Pyotr Kochetkov #52 of the Carolina Hurricanes during the second period of the game at Capital One Arena on March 22, 2024 in Washington, DC. | Photo by Scott Taetsch/Getty Images

Tired Hurricanes lose a “weird” game in Washington.

The Carolina Hurricanes’ five game winning streak came to an end on Friday night as they lost to the Washington Capitals, 7-6 in a shootout at the Capital One Arena.

Coach Rod Brind’Amour called it a “weird” game and that is probably the best description of it.

The Canes spent much of the game killing penalties which ruined any attempt at creating some consistent flow.

They had two goals reversed, one off of an offsides play by Svechnikov and the other because of “goaltender interference”.

The usually outstanding penalty kill was certainly lacking as they allowed three powerplay goals against. Officially the Caps went 3 for 6 while the Canes went 1 for 2.

The fact that Canes were playing the second of a back-to-back, their third game in four nights, and their 10th game in 16 nights also didn’t help. They did not look fresh and also this could have caused some of their penalties.

Sebastian Aho had a hat-trick and now has 30 goals for the season.

Seth Jarvis scored again giving him a total of 27 for the season. He extended his scoring streak to six consecutive games.

Jake Guentzel had three assists and has a ton of points since joining Carolina.

It would take a book to properly recap this game and I don’t have time for that. Here is a brief synopsis.

In the first period, Aho would score his first, Sonny Milano also scored the first of his three for the night, and Jaccob Slavin got one with just 48 seconds left in the period to give Carolina a 2-1 lead.

In the second, Ovechkin scored a powerplay goal, Milano scored again, Aho scored his second, and Martin Necas did a beautiful job of setting up Brady Skjei who scored with just 8 seconds left in the period.

The third period was the craziest of them all as the Caps scored three times, twice on the powerplay. The Canes did a nice job of not giving up and Jarvis scored a powerplay goal midway through the period. They tied the game on Aho’s third goal, (the puck bounced in off of him from a Necas shot), with two minutes and change left.

After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout where the Canes have struggled all season long. Sure enough, Kuznetsov, Svechnikov, Teravainen, Aho, and Guentzel were all stopped.

Dylan Strome made the game-winner on Washington’s fifth attempt and that was that.

The Hurricanes could feel they were lucky to get the point, the way the game was going.

They will take Saturday off and then prepare to battle the Leafs back at the PNC on Sunday.

Game Notes:

The Canes outshot the Caps 31-25. They only won 44% in the faceoff circle.

Skjei led the way with 23:19 of ice time. Pesce had 23:15.

The Caps had 30 hits compared to 16 for Carolina.

The Canes travel north to take on a desperate Caps team.

The Carolina Hurricanes are streaking, but will have a tough test against a Washington team just three points out of a wildcard spot.

After a tough January, the Capitals are 11-8-2 in February and March. Washington is doing just enough to keep the final wildcard spot within reach.

Captain Alexander Ovechkin is back to fueling the Washington offense. After scoring just eight goals through his first 43 games of the season, Ovechkin has 15 goals in the last 22 games. Ovechkin has five goals in the last three games.

Charlie Lindgren is now the top goaltender for the Capitals, taking that role from Darcy Kuemper.

In 37 games played, he has 18 wins, tallying a 2.72 goals against average and a .911 save percentage. Lindgren has earned the win for all six of the Capitals’ victories during March and has started four straight games.

The key matchup tonight will be Washington’s power play versus Carolina’s penalty kill. The Capitals have scored power-play goals in five of the last six games, including two games scoring two goals while on the man advantage.

The Hurricanes have not allowed a power-play goal in nine straight games and have killed off 62 of the last 67 power plays.

Tonight will be an emotional return for Evgeny Kuznetsov. He played his entire career with Washington before a trade to Carolina earlier in March. In the first game between these teams this season, Kuznetsov scored the shootout winner for Washington.

Seth Jarvis remains red-hot. His overtime winner last night improved his goal-scoring streak to five straight games, and he has scored seven goals in the last seven games.

Sebastian Aho has eight points in the last three games and has 14 points in 10 games so far this month.

Jarvis is now one behind Aho’s 27 goals for the team lead. Let’s see who wins the race to 30.

Carolina will likely ice the same lineup as last night except for goalie. If head coach Rod Brind’Amour continues his recent trend of alternating starts, Pyotr Kochetkov should get the nod tonight.

Teuvo Teravainen and Jack Drury will be out, but both skated on Thursday. Keep an eye on Jesper Fast. He was out against Philadelphia, but his injury is not expected to be long-term.

Seth Jarvis notched the game-winner and Frederik Andersen made 30 saves to lead Carolina.

The Carolina Hurricanes returned home after a three game road trip and they won their fifth consecutive game with a 3-2 decision in overtime over the Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night at the PNC.

Seth Jarvis scored the game-winner off of a nice feed by Brent Burns just a minute and change into the extra period.

Jarvis has scored a goal in five consecutive games and is now one tally behind team leader, Sebastian Aho, with 26 goals scored so far this season.

Goalie, Frederik Andersen picked up the well deserved win as he made 30 saves on 32 shots. Andersen has yet to lose a decision, (5-0-0) since he returned from injury.

Coach Rod Brind’Amour gave his goalie credit for the win and after the game he mentioned that his team did not play well.

They were short a forward this game, played with 11 forwards and 7 defensemen, and looked a bit out of synch compared to other recent games.

After a scoreless first period, Jordan Martinook made it 1-0 with a nice shot early in the second but the Flyers tied it up just 25 seconds later.

A bit later in the period, Jalen Chatfield gave his team the lead again, but once again the Flyers would tie it up, this time with a score midway through the third period.

The game stayed tied until the decisive goal by Jarvis in overtime.

The Canes will make a quick trip to Washington for a game against the Caps on Friday night.

The Canes return home and will look to continue their winning ways.

The Carolina Hurricanes are back home riding a four game winning streak and find themselves with two goalies who are performing very well, a group of defensive duos who all look like they could be the first pairing, and some forwards who continue to develop some magical chemistry.

They now have a record of 43-20-6 for 92 points and are just two points behind the division leading New York Rangers who have 94 points.

The Philadelphia Flyers are visiting and they will be a desperate team. The Flyers are still inside the playoff wildcard bubble but they are in need of points.

The Flyers also seem to be in the midst of some internal drama. Head Coach John Tortorella benched team captain Sean Couturier for the game against Toronto on Tuesday night.

When asked about the healthy scratch post game, the coach refused to answer any questions regarding that. In the meantime, a former player had some criticism.

https://phillyhockeynow.com/2024/03/20/philadelphia-flyers-john-tortorella-brandon-dubinsky-called-out/

Will Couturier be scratched again? The Flyers won against Toronto, so who knows?

On the other side, the Hurricanes seem to be clicking, (and cooking). The newcomers are fitting in well while making their presence known and goaltenders, Kochetkov and Andersen both seem to be at the top of their games.

It should be a good one.
