As usual, I have a few shots from warmups, then game shots from my seats in the lower level. Of particular disappointment, I did not get a birds eye view (or many shots) of the Gleason-Lucic heavyweight title bout as it happened right below me, so I was resigned watching most of it on the videoboard.

The Bruins dictated the pace early, jumping to a two-goal lead and eventually outlasting a Hurricanes comeback to win at PNC Arena, 5-3. Jeff Skinner scored in his fourth straight game for Carolina, and Eric Staal and Alexander Semin each had two points in the loss.

Carolina fell to 2-3 on the season, allowing a late goal in falling to Boston at PNC Arena. Here's a closer look at last night's 5-3 loss.

Three Observations

1. As Carolina's special teams go, so goes the Hurricanes. Monday was another example of subpar special teams costing the team points. The Bruins scored two power play goals — one was Tyler Seguin's empty-netter —and a shorthanded marker to Carolina's zero, making the team 0-2 when they lose that battle, 2-0 when they win it. The "all the eggs in one basket" tactic coach Kirk Muller has implemented on his first power play unit looks brilliant when it works, but on a night like Monday — when the Bruins were able to use Zdeno Chara and their top kill unit to neutralize the Hurricanes — it seems shortsighted.

2. Carolina clearly missed Justin Faulk, who missed the game with an upper-body injury. Joni Pitkanen and Jamie McBain each picked up the slack, playing 29:13 and 25:48, respectively, to log big minutes for the second straight game. Joe Corvo played less than eight minutes, just the third time he's played less than 10 minutes in his 647 career regular season games. The last time was Nov. 30, 2009, when Corvo opened the scoring for the Canes vs. Washington in the game's first five minutes, but was then cut by a skate blade right after the goal, playing just 2:42 that night and missing the next two months with the injury. Prior to that, Corvo's other such outing was all the way back on Dec. 13, 2003. He played just 6:10 that night for the Kings, and he was benched for the night after being on the ice for Eric Nickulas' game-winning goal in the first period of St. Louis' 2-1 win.

3. "From there we have to find a way to get a point out of it and get it to overtime." Those were the words of captain Eric Staal, and they spoke a lot of the team's mentality in the final minutes of the game. The Canes looked like they were playing for the guaranteed one point in the second half of the third period, and in the end their lack of aggression cost them when David Krejci notched the game-winner with less than two minutes left.

Number To Know

24 — Penalty minutes for Tim Gleason through five games, after he picked up five more for fighting Bruins tree trunk Milan Lucic. Despite his worthy reputation as a tough player who is willing to fight, Gleason has never registered 100 PIMs in an NHL season and had averaged just a shade under one penalty minute per game during his NHL career coming into this shortened campaign. In other news, the readers at HockeyFights.com have given Lucic the edge in the fight. Um, judge for yourself.

Plus

Alexander Semin — Semin continues to impress just five games into his Hurricanes career. He registered two assists — including a brilliant steal on Chris Kelly in the offensive zone that led to him feeding Eric Staal for the goal that tied the game at 3 — and even had the move of the night when he faked out Chara to create a scoring chance. He was on the ice for all three Carolina goals and finished the night plus-3.

Minus

Jussi Jokinen — Jokinen continues to struggle as Carolina's third-line center. He is still without a point this season and Monday was his third game in five in which he didn't even register a shot on goal. He was also just four of 12 in the faceoff circle vs. the Bruins, the one part of his game that had been noticeably good in the season's first two weeks. Jokinen hasn't been alone in lack of scoring — five of Carolina's current bottom six forwards are without a point — but Muller had hoped using him on the third line would spark more scoring and balance out his team. Instead, the opposite has happened.

The Carolina Hurricanes lose a tough one, 5-3 to the Boston Bruins at the PNC Arena on Monday night

The Carolina Hurricanes kept coming from behind but the Boston Bruins controlled the end of the game and eventually skated away with a 5-3 victory on Monday night at Raleigh. The loss dropped the Hurricanes record to 2-3 while the Bruins have yet to lose in regulation and sport a 4-0-1 record.

The visitors came out strong to start the game and outshot and out-chanced Carolina while jumping out to a 2-0 lead.

Brad Marchand would open the scoring with a shorthanded tally 3:16 into the game. Then Zdeno Chara would score a powerplay goal three minutes later to stake the Bruins to their lead.

Mid-way through the period, Tim Gleason dropped the gloves with Milan Lucic and the defenseman succeeded in firing up the crowd as well as his teammates.

Shortly after the fight, Jamie McBain chipped in a nice pass from Eric Staal to make it 2-1.

After a pretty evenly played second period up to that point, Nathan Horton would put the Bruins back up by two with 4:08 left in the period. But Carolina would come roaring back on goals by Jeff Skinner and Eric Staal to tie things up before the end of the period.

Skinner gathered in a pass from Jordan Staal, took the puck inside to goalie Anton Khudobin, and scored top shelf. Just 50 seconds later, Alexander Semin made a nice steal inside the blueline and fed the streaking Carolina Captain, who also scored in close.

The third period was played cautiously but with about five minutes left the Bruins were controlling play in the Carolina zone and eventually scored when David Krejci potted his first of the season with just 1:50 left in the game.

Eric Staal was called for slashing shortly after that and the Canes would not be able to mount a serious scoring threat the rest of the way. Tyler Seguin scored the empty netter to close things out.

It was a disappointing game for special teams as the Canes powerplay looked ineffective against the top penalty killers in the league, who have yet to allow a powerplay goal all season.

Coach Muller said that would be one of the main focuses of the team in their next stretch of three days off.

Next up for the Hurricanes will be the Ottawa Senators at home on Friday night.

Game Notes:

The Canes were 0-6 on the powerplay while allowing their first shortie of the year. That puts them at 3-26 so far this season, (11.5%).

For the first time this season the team was outshot in a game, (38-32). The Bruins had an 18-8 advantage in the deciding third.

Alexander Semin led the team with five shots on goal, was credited with two takeaways, had a team high +3, and chipped in with two assists.

Bobby Sanguinetti posted a team high five hits. Chad LaRose had four. The Bruins outhit the Canes 25-20.

Joni Pitkanen skated over 29 minutes, a high for both teams. Next highest time on the ice for Carolina was Jamie McBain with 25:48.

The team only won 41% of their faceoffs: J Staal, (50%), E Staal, (29%), Jokinen (33%), Brent (50%).

Tim Gleason fought a tough customer in Lucic, pretty much to a draw. He was doing well early, but the bigger Bruin was wearing him out at the end.

Jeff Skinner now has goals in four straight games. Jordan Staal has assists in four straight.

Sarah Connors from SB Nation's Stanley Cup of Chowder gives us a scouting report on the Boston Bruins before they make their first trip to Raleigh tonight.

The Canes' run of four straight games against Northeast Division opponents continues tonight as the Boston Bruins come to PNC Arena for the first time this season. Sarah Connors is the managing editor of SB Nation's Stanley Cup of Chowder, and in between bites from her blog's namesake delicacy she was kind enough to answer Three Questions about tonight's game.

The Bruins have at least a point in all four of their games so far this year despite having exactly zero players in the top 75 in league scoring. What gives? Is it safe to say they haven't yet hit their stride despite their record?

Yes, I think that's safe to say - in part. The Bruins have a tendency to score by committee in the best of times, and it's that scoring depth that keeps them winning when their top scorers hit ruts. Tyler Seguin hasn't found the back of the net yet this season, and neither has David Krejci or Rich Peverley. However, the flip side of it is that only four Bruins haven't made it onto the scoresheet through four games, and two of those players have only played in two games so far.

It's not a particular concern yet - I'd say if we hit ten games in and Seguin and Krejci haven't netted a goal yet, then I'd start worrying, but four games isn't quite a good enough sample size. Both of their lines have looked great so far (Seguin with Marchand and Bergeron, and Krejci with Horton and Lucic).

With Dougie Hamilton on fire to start the season and all but certain to not be returned to the OHL, how will he be used as the season goes on? Has he earned Claude Julien's trust to play tough minutes, or will he be protected from burnout by the likes of Chara and Boychuk?

Dougie Hamilton has already been given tough minutes, actually. In the Bruins' first game against New York, he played approximately 9:00, mostly sheltered minutes with Dennis Seidenberg as his partner, and the pairings were Chara-Boychuk, Seidenberg-Hamilton, and McQuaid-Ference. However, Seidenberg then missed two games with some sort of minor leg injury. Hamilton was promoted to the top pairing with Chara, and Boychuk was paired with Aaron Johnson.

In that second game, Hamilton's ice time ballooned to 23:27. From there it dropped to 18 minutes in the third game and 16 minutes against the Islanders on Friday night, when he was reunited with Seidenberg. He's averaged about 4-5 minutes of power play time per game, as well - I think it's safe to say that Julien will not be using him in a sheltered role at all. He's proven that he's stalwart in his own zone and capable of making better breakout passes than...well, pretty much anyone on Boston's blueline right now.

And if anyone were to bail him out, it certainly wouldn't be Boychuk - he's rather the weakest link on Boston's defense right now. Paired with Seidenberg or Chara though, who can each cover for his few and far-between rookie mistakes, he's quite good.

Which team is the Bruins' biggest threat in the division and why? If you're putting a percentage on the Bruins' chances to win the division, what's that number?

The biggest threat within the division...hmm, that's tough. It's not Ottawa or Toronto, it's probably not Montreal until Max Pacioretty returns and PK Subban signs...likely Buffalo, I suppose, at least until Montreal gets its ducks in a row. When that happens, those games will, as usual, be a delight. That said, I put Boston's chances of winning the division at approximately 1000%. Yeah, that extra zero was on purpose. :)

Tune in tonight as the Carolina Hurricanes return to Raleigh to face the Boston Bruins at PNC Arena.

Tonight marks the first of three meetings between the Carolina Hurricanes and Boston Bruins. The Hurricanes swept the series against the Bruins last season with four regulation wins. The Bruins come into tonight's game with points in all four games played, their only loss in overtime against the Rangers in New York. Their last game was a 4-2 win against the New York Islanders in Boston on Friday night. The Hurricanes dropped their first two games before sweeping the Buffalo Sabres in back-to-back games on Thursday in Raleigh and on Friday in Buffalo to climb to a .500 record.

Hurricanes Notes

The Hurricanes followed up a high scoring affair on Thursday with a tightly-contested win on Friday against the Buffalo Sabres to complete the home-and-home sweep. After scoring just two goals in the first two losses, they have posted nine goals in the two wins.

Jordan Staal is riding a three-game assist streak, and Jeff Skinner's lethal backhands have given him a three-game goal scoring streak (and four goals total).

Alexander Semin is two goals shy of 200 career NHL goals. Sasha scored his first goal in the sightless eye on Friday night in typical fashion, a top shelf snipe from the middle of the zone that had color commentator Tripp Tracy reaching for his Russian Rosetta Stone (watch here).

Forward Jeremy Welsh was reassigned to the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday (news link).

Justin Faulk left the game in the second period on Friday after he collided with Steve Ott and did not return. Faulk is listed as day-to-day but skated in a full practice with the team on Sunday and fared well according to media reports. He will be evaluated today for a possible return to the line-up tonight. Regardless, the nature of any injury appears to be short-term.

Cam Ward is expected to get the start in net. Ward is 12-10-2 with a 2.54 GAA and three shutouts in his previous appearances against Boston.

Following is the depth chart as the team practiced on Sunday.

Jiri Tlusty - Eric Staal - Alexander Semin
Jeff Skinner - Jordan Staal - Zac Dalpe
Drayson Bowman - Jussi Jokinen - Chad LaRose
Patrick Dwyer - Tim Brent - Kevin Westgarth/Zach Boychuk

Tim Gleason - Justin Faulk
Joni Pitkanen - Jamie McBain
Jay Harrison - Joe Corvo
Bobby Sanguinetti

Cam Ward
Dan Ellis

Out of line-up: Tuomo Ruutu (injured non-roster, hip)

Bruins Notes

The Bruins sit near the top of the Eastern Conference standings with 7 points and no regulation losses in the early stages of the season. The Bruins are also perfect so far on the penalty kill, allowing no goals while short-handed.

While much of the Bruins quick start can be attributed to the outstanding performance of goaltender Tuukka Rask, the Bruins' fourth forward line (known as the 'merlot line' for the color of their practice jerseys) has drawn accolades as well. Center Gregory Campbell and wingers Shawn Thornton and Daniel Paille have six points so far this season, including two goals in the win against the Islanders on Friday.

Defenseman Adam McQuaid did not travel to Raleigh with the team and is out of the lineup due to personal reasons. Aaron Johnson is expected to take his slot. Former Hurricane Dennis Seidenberg returned to the lineup Saturday night after missing two games with a lower body injury.

Will Cam Ward not be wasting his time with Tuukka Rask tonight? Rask has been spectacular in net so far for the Bruins (1.96 GAA, .925 save percentage), but it has been speculated that Claude Julien may rest him tonight in favor of a start tomorrow night in Boston against the New Jersey Devils. If that is the case, expect to see backup netminder Anton Khudobin, with only seven NHL games to his resume (all but one with the Minnesota Wild) but with an impressive 6-1 record in those games (1.32 GAA and .961 save percentage). Khudobin has never faced the Hurricanes; Rask is 2-2-0 in five career games with a 2.68 GAA.

Projected Bruins lines:
