Special Teams Fail Canes in 5-3 Loss to Flyers

The Carolina Hurricanes special team play has struggled much of this young season and those difficulties cost the team on Saturday night in Philadelphia as they dropped a 5-3 decision to the Flyers.

The Flyers went 3-3 while with the man advantage, staking themselves to a comfortable 5-2 lead midway through the second period when Claude Giroux scored the third straight powerplay tally for the home team. Just one night earlier, the Carolina penalty kill looked perfect against the Senators, but they could not kill a penalty this night.

In the meantime, the Canes powerplay was mostly ineffective except for Patrick Dwyer's score off of a nice pass by Jordan Staal in the third.

The Flyers came out fired up early in the game and carried the play in the Carolina zone. Just 3:34 into the period, Jussi Jokinen was called for interference and the Flyers would capitalize as Kurtis Foster ripped a shot past Dan Ellis to make it 1-0.

Shortly after that score though, Eric Staal would set up Joni Pitkanen for an open chance and the Finn made no mistake, tying the score at one.

Later in the period, the Canes would have a mix up at center ice and the Flyers came down with an advantage on Ellis. Jakub Voracek put a shot on the goalie and the rebound came right out to a wide open Braydon Coburn, who scored his first goal of the year during the play.

A few seconds later Jokinen would take another penalty, an unnecessary slashing infraction, and Danny Briere would score to make it 3-1, Philadelphia.

But the Canes kept fighting and just 33 seconds later, Jiri Tlusty forced a turnover deep in the Flyers' zone and E. Staal would make a nice move on Ilya Bryzgalov to make it 3-2 and keep the visitors in the game.

Coach Kirk Muller stuck with Dan Ellis to start the second period, but a turnover behind the Carolina net led to a quick Flyer goal to start the second period and Ellis was yanked in favor of Cam Ward just 52 seconds into it.

Much of the rest of the game, Carolina was firing a variety of shots in the Flyer zone, some on target, some not, but there was mostly frustration as Dwyer would be the only one able to light the lamp the final two periods for the boys in white.

The team will not have much time to dwell on this loss as they prepare for their next game in Toronto on Monday night.

Game Notes:

The Canes are now 4 of 36 on the powerplay, tied for 25th in the league, (11.1%). They have allowed 10 goals on 33 attempts during the kill, good for 27th in the league, (69.7%).

Eric Staal has points in five straight games. He finished tonight with a goal and an assist.

Alexander Semin had a team high six shots on goal and led all forwards with 25 minutes of ice time. Joni Pitkanen led all skaters with 28:37 of TOI.

The Hurricanes had 42 shots on goal, missed the net 17 times, and had 32 blocked, for total of 91 attempts. But with the big lead, the Flyers went into defensive mode much of the second period and almost all of the third.

Ellis allowed four goals on 12 shots while Ward allowed one on the 12 shots he faced.

With the Hurricanes beginning a six-game road trip, Three Questions will be logging the frequent flyer miles in large quantities. We start today in Philly, where we'll have a provolone wit'out, thanks.

The circus is coming to town, so it's appropriate that the Canes' longest road trip starts in a city where the local hockey team seems to be a perpetual circus - and that can be both a good and a bad thing. In a strange bit of shortened-season scheduling, the Flyers open a four-game homestand tonight against the Hurricanes, which ends next Saturday against...the Hurricanes.

Which is to say that you'll be seeing a lot of Broad Street Hockey in this space over the next week. Travis Hughes, the BSH managing editor and NHL editor for SB Nation, joins us to preview tonight's game. I, for one, welcome our esteemed SBN overlord.

We remember from his time here that Peter Laviolette, much like Mike Keenan or Pat Burns in years past, has a pretty defined shelf life of 2-3 seasons, after which point his effectiveness dramatically declines. Has he reached that point behind the Flyers' bench yet? How much more time will he get to turn it around?

I don't think Lavi has reached the point where he's ineffective, although I totally understand that critique of him as a coach. I do think that, at least so far this season, he hasn't been able to adapt his up-tempo style to a roster that lacks the personnel to pull that off. How can you have defensemen chipping in offensively and taking risks when they flat out don't have the speed to get back should they screw up? That's already bitten the Flyers many times this season, in particular. Ultimately, I think Lavi is a good coach and I want to see him get more of a chance -- as in, beyond this year if things really go south -- but with Ed Snider in charge, and with the way you could see the pressure in Lavi's eyes last night in Washington, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a move made. Then again, of course, there's time to turn things around still.

The Flyers sit in last place in the Atlantic, but they've only played two of their eight games at home and start a four-game homestand tonight against the Hurricanes. How many points do they need from this homestand to at least stay within shouting distance of a playoff spot, and is it too early to pour dirt on the Flyers' postseason hopes?

Far too early right now. The Flyers are playing worst-team-in-the-East style hockey, but with the way the rest of the division looks so far, it's too early to throw dirt on the playoffs. It's too early regardless, but especially given the state of the rest of the division. The Rangers aren't playing well, I'm not sold on Pittsburgh in the slightest bit, and the Islanders and Devils are both teams I expect to see outside the postseason this year. So, there's hope -- if for no other reason than everybody else is really bad at hockey too.

So far, the Flyers' injured list has been a who's who of big names - Hartnell, Rinaldo, Meszaros, now apparently Simmonds too. Will Paul Holmgren need to make a deal to compensate for the team's injuries, or are they confident enough that they'll be able to get contributions from elsewhere in the lineup?

Can't speak for Homer, obviously, but both given the situation and given his M.O., I'd be shocked if he weren't already looking around. I'm shocked he entered the season with the defense in the shape it's in, but I guess that shows how little a market was available to him. Offensively, Hartnell, Simmonds and Matt Read (to name a few) all overachieved last season and were big pieces in the Flyers' offensive success. I'm not confident they can replace the production they've lost to injury. I'm not even confident they could replicate last year's production with everybody healthy when you consider certain guys may have taken steps backward this year regardless, and the loss of Jaromir Jagr.

And so begins the Carolina Hurricanes first extended road trip of the season, where they will visit five cities and play six games in ten days, starting with the Philadelphia Flyers tonight in the city of brotherly love.

Carolina Hurricanes at Philadelphia Flyers
Saturday, February 2, 2013 - 7:00 pm EST
Wells Fargo Center - Philadelphia, PA
TV - Fox Sports Carolinas HD Radio - 99.9 The Fan

Hurricanes Record: 3-3-0, 6 pts.
Flyers Record: 2-6-0, 4 pts.

Tonight marks the first of three meetings this season between the Carolina Hurricanes and Philadelphia Flyers. Last year the teams met four times with the Flyers taking 3-1 series bragging rights. Both teams played last night. The Flyers lost 3-2 to the Capitals on the road in Washington, while the Hurricanes won at home against the Ottawa Senators in a 1-0 shutout.

Game Notes

The Hurricanes hit the road coming off a solid home win against a strong Ottawa Senators team. The Canes were only able to muster one goal against hot netminder Craig Anderson, but Eric Staal's tip-in of a blueline shot from Alexander Semin proved enough to seal the deal, as the team performed solid defensively and goaltender Dan Ellis was perfect in net.

Staal now has points in four straight games and Semin has points in three straight games.

Kirk Muller didn't tip his hand with regarding to tonight's starting goaltender (or any other line-up changes) in his post-game interview, saying the decision would be made "on the plane."

Coming of their disappointing performance against the Capitals, the Flyers may consider a home game against the Hurricanes to be just what they need to break their last-in-conference slump. They had not lost in ten straight home games against the Hurricanes before losing the last time the two teams met in Philly, a 4-2 loss on November 21, 2011.

The Flyers have been unable to put much in the net so far this season, with only 16 goals scored in eight games (seven of those coming in one game). Matt Read leads the team with three goals. The Flyers offense may take another step backwards if forward Wayne Simmonds is unable to play. Simmonds left last night's game after taking an elbow to the face from John Erskine late in the first period.

Also out of line-up for the Flyers are Scott Hartnell (foot), Andrej Meszaros (shoulder).

Brian will have more analysis on our opponent later in the day, and we'll start the game thread at 6:30 pm. See you there.
