Turns out Jussi Jokinen's $3 million salary for next season actually is a stumbling block to other teams interested in acquiring his services.

Both Jokinen and Tim Wallace cleared waivers at noon today, and Wallace has been assigned to AHL Charlotte. The Hurricanes remain on the hook for Jokinen's salary, as the new collective bargaining agreement eliminated re-entry waivers. The CBA allows for two amnesty buyouts per team in the upcoming offseason, where the player would be paid the buyout amount but it would not count against the salary cap, and it seems plausible that, should he be unable to trade Jokinen, GM Jim Rutherford could buy him out and remove his hit from the team's cap for the 2013-14 season.

Details from the team regarding Wallace's assignment to Charlotte are below. Note that the team does not issue press releases regarding players who go unclaimed on waivers, so there is no official press release regarding Jokinen's clearing.

The Hurricanes made big news Tuesday morning coming off a four-day break. Chad LaRose has been activated from injured reserve after missing ten games with a concussion, and Jussi Jokinen & Tim Wallace have been placed on waivers.

With a huge game against the division-leading Winnipeg Jets on the horizon later tonight, the Carolina Hurricanes made some noteworthy moves Tuesday morning coming off their four-day break.

The team announced that forward Chad LaRose, who has missed the last ten games after suffering a concussion, has been activated from the injured reserve list. LaRose is expected to play tonight and spent the morning skate on the wing with Jordan Staal and Jeff Skinner.

The team press release regarding LaRose's activation is below.

At the morning skate, many noted that Jussi Jokinen and Tim Wallace were not present for the morning's festivities, and the News and Observer's Chip Alexander tweeted that there could be a "surprising" scratch for tonight's game to make room for LaRose. Sure enough, following the skate, Chip tweeted that the Canes planned to put both players on waivers at noon, and at that time all the usual places (Darren Dreger, James Mirtle, Tim Wharnsby, Elliotte Friedman, Mike Maniscalco, et al.) confirmed the news.

Jokinen has one year remaining on a contract paying him $3 million annually. Wallace, who cleared waivers once before earlier this season, is on a two-way deal for this season only. The Checkers' Paul Branecky tweeted that, should both players clear, Wallace will likely be sent to Charlotte but Jokinen will probably not leave the Hurricanes.

We will find out at noon tomorrow whether either player - or both of them - have cleared waivers.
